Pleased your son's op went well. If they tested you several days prior to being allowed access to ward then, they may have known your were negative, not sure they are required to tell you, hoping you did not go in straight after test as that would be strange. LFT usage is a different animal, it identifies infectious people but not so good at pre and post infectious is my understanding. This seems to be why the CT figure is important at less than 27, the figure when infectious people get picked up. It us worth noting that Prof Deeks (Birminghham student testing) identified 6 not picked up by LFT had CT's over that, meaning these people are either starting to be infectious or have a waning infection. If you therefore mass test frequently, say do a second test 3 days later then you pick up the starting to become infectious missed previously and the the ones post infection are not infectious anyway. So used in different ways LFT's are valuable, this is my understanding and happy to be shot down (filter operating) as no scientist. Apologies for rambling a bit been on Punk IPA!
