Media consolidation6 Aug 2019 13:50
With the expected merger between Viacom and CBS imminent
the media/entertainment industry consolidation continues to accelerate.
AT&T/Time Warner ( now Warner Media), Disney/Fox, Comcast /Universal/ NBC/SKY
are recent examples of this mega consolidation in the industry to compete with NetFlix,
Amazon, Apple, et al.
The key driver behind these moves is to grab subscriptions and market share in the
digital TV/Movie/Entertainment revolution.
The trojan horse is CONTENT,CONTENT ,CONTENT and big premiums are being paid to
buy content and/or develop own content( programmes, movies etc).
ITV WITH OVER 40,000 HOURS OF DIGITALISED CONTENT is one of the last remaining
players in the global media business that is still independent.
A natural merger/acquirer in respect of ITV may be BT in the UK but others like Liberty, Apple ( iTV ?)
Amazon and even Netflix could be sniffing around.
I just have a gut feeling that as with TV companies like NBC and CBS in the US now part of major media companies
ITV could be in the crosshairs particularly with the bombed-out share price and the collapse
in Sterling.
We shall see.
