RE: M&S clothing re-launch22 Feb 2021 13:53
The cost advantages of moving the bulk of the clothing business online would be enormous, it would mean that stock control would be much tighter because there wouldn't be a vast amount of stock needed to service the store network.
Ranges could be broadened giving the customer more choice - in much the same way as Ocado do with their grocery range.
This would leave the stores with just the basic everyday range of clothing that always attracts buyers - this range could also be sold online with Ocado.
The eventual bricks and mortar aim would be for a mainly out of town store network, focussed on food with a reasonable range of everyday clothing and some fast moving home ware lines.
Also about 10-20 larger stores around the country in high footfall areas, including Central London, that would offer and showcase all the M&S.com lines in addition to a food hall and general merchandise.
