Drax take all the wood from commercial forestry, pellet it, transport it around the globe and burn it, producing high emissions - this wood could be used for 101 other uses.

EQTEC's tech is just used for waste - trees are trimmed and the combustible material is taken to a local gasification plant to supply power for the local community, producing low emissions - the cleaned up woodland if far less likely to attract forest fires.

As you say woody materials can be a good source of biofuel - especially if it is combustible material collected from forests prone to forest fires - in California or Southern Europe for example.

Yes, Drax is scandalous - the logic they use is badly floored they contend that because they are burning bio waste that is produced from plants that have absorbed CO2, that it is somehow OK - ridiculous.

Biomass and other waste, including municipal waste can be used to produce energy with minimal emissions by the process of gasification - waste is heated up to vaporise - its not burnt - and the gas produced is then used as a fuel source. Its actually the cheapest way to produce hydrogen.

A well financed partner with Ocado providing all the expertise would certainly be an option in Germany.

Whitbread are currently successfully growing their Premier Inn chain in Germany from nothing with new sites and a few acquisitions - no reason why Ocado cannot do the same.

I actually feel quite honoured to be called young - its been a while - the young are I think much more in touch with reality and solutions over green issues - I guess older members of society will have to be dragged kicking and screaming to accept unavoidable change.

France already get 80% of their electricity from nuclear power and export some to the UK.
The problem in the UK is that many nuclear power stations are near the end of their productive life and our short sighted politicians have been slow to commission more, other than Hinkley, because of the cost.

Politicians simply act in the short term in response to public opinion, so don't expect any ration thought or logic - if oil prices are high they will just go for an extra share of the profits for the exchequer.

I agree If Enquest and other carbon based energy companies make the transition and invest their profits in renewables then they won't get hit by windfall taxes - profits from carbon fuel used to fund renewables would be a major plus - its also the principal reason for a long term investment in Enquest because when they do make the transition the SP will increase as institutional investors pile back in.

Today's slight reversal, I think can be attributed to ITM successful overnight fund raise - both companies SP's tend to follow one another in fortunes.

If Brent does stay at around this level, or higher, for an extended period then I think it will accelerate the change to nuclear and renewables.

Not only will it improve the viability of renewables and nuclear but Government's will get greater support and acceptance for the change as a way out from dependence on expensive carbon based fuel.

Governments may also take the opportunity to impose windfall taxes on carbon fuels and pass on the proceeds as subsidies to companies and/or consumers. There have already been calls by some opposition politicians in the UK for windfall taxes on gas producers.

Looking at countries where Ocado doesn't have a partner yet - such as Germany - in light of Kroger's experience opening in regions where they don't have stores, it may be better to partner with a well funded new entrant to the countries retail market without any store presence.

Regardless of your own views on climate change, the interesting thing about the climate change debate in the UK is that it is the young who have the perceived wisdom and are educating their parents on the issue - I find it fascinating - our current political leaders should find it alarming.
