The reported fall in retail sales of just 0.2% in September after also falling for the four previous months would normally be cause for concern, but it needs further analysis.
Numbers in the early part of the summer were distorted by Covid and although August wasn't good, it never is because of holiday's.
As for the September dip, that was entirely predictable because of the fuel shortage - the only surprise was that it wasn't higher.
I still think that we can be confident as Christmas approaches.
