One post all day - seriously?

Skindle - spot on. Unfortunately, it no longer surprises me - I am resigned to it. Sad to see what has happened to the country over the last 15 years or so. My local Waitrose closed, and is now an Aldi -that pretty much sums things up.

As for the politicians/ bankers/"leaders" etc. - they love to present themselves as being the solution to our (multiple) woes. Truth is, they're the cause of many of them. People who crave power should really be excluded from having any - putting them in charge is like asking Gary Glitter to run your creche - it's going to end badly.

Just returned from a lunchtime pint (or two) by the river, so catching up on events.

a) fordm - I am clearly a bit dm, but what is ESG? And by the way - how is your koi pond/swimming pool these days?

b) DB/C2H - used to work for BA, and could see the slide in standards, and short-term thinking/lack of empathy/ corporate greed etc. even back then - amongst the reasons I got out. But as DB alluded to, a bad experience as a customer (or employee) does not equate to a bad investment - unfortunately a depressing representation of the world we live in. The Dow has bounced right back after a shaky start, and the Nasdaq is having a really good day, so it would seem that there is a degree of confidence as regards resolving the debt ceiling issue. With a long weekend coming up, both here and across the pond, that could be tested tomorrow. Be nice to get something official before the weekend - would certainly mean a less stressful 3 days.

the debt figures (usa) are just astonishing - and the rise in it over the last 13/14 years is quite spectacular. it's bad enough in this country, where we are paying over £2 billion per week in interest alone. that means, with a quick back-of-***-packet calculation, that the usa must be paying about $25 billion per week in interest. that's $25,000,000,000. per week. interest. bonkers.

meanwhile, those canny norwegians have got about $£1.2 trillion stashed under under their sled-bed. nice.

We seem to be treading water recently, which (while better than drowning) is a little tedious. That'll teach me to whinge about rollercoasters and vertiginous mountains.

In an ideal world, we would just see a nice, steady, incremental rise. Of course, in that same world, I would be sharing my Barbados beach-house with with a lingerie model. And her sister.

Nice late surge in American market. EZJ reports tomorrow - if that goes well (and it looks like it will) - then it could be a good day tomorrow. As a holder of both, which many here probably are, it's been a good week so far, and tomorrow could make it a REALLY good week. Then again, maybe China will choose tonight to invade Taiwan. ha ha ha.

Looks like I had a bit of a rant last night - sorry about that. Anyway, hoping for a positive end to the week - would like to think that with the company buying a pile of its' own shares, we could see some upward pressure on the price, and £1.60 isn't far away. I'm sure that many here , including myself, wish we had bailed out at £1.73 - which was only 3 months ago. Then again, if calling the top, or bottom, were that easy, we would all be millionaires. Still- £1.73 again should be very attainable, and while I can't agree with a lot of the "£2.50/ £.3.00" predictions, I don't consider £2.00 to be too unrealistic in the coming months - although personally, I will probably bail out prior to that.

Anyway, as usual I don't really have a clue about what will happen, so despite my friends advice that "hope is not a strategy", that's pretty much all I have for now.

".. even a small holiday apartment.." I worked on a cruise ship for a while - mostly around the Baltic. Around the Norwegian fjords, there were small cabins clinging to the sides of the vertiginous (I love that word ) cliffs - barely accessible. I am a man of simple needs - right now, one of those would do me just fine. As long as there's a pub within a 30 minute walk.

Let's hope IAG helps pay for that.

I used to find it quite restrictive, but I am now quite liberated. The idea that I would listen to even one word of the m orons in charge actually makes me laugh. I really enjoy my outrider/maverick status.

Mitchell is a classic example. It reminds me of Jimmy Mcnulty in "The wire" -" Everyone stays quiet, everyone gets paid".

He gets paid £600,000 a year to do one thing - keep inflation down. He's not part of the solution - he's part of the problem. If it was as simple as "inflation up - raise interest rates - inflation down, drop interest rates" why don't we employ a chimpanzee instead (apologies to chimps). Or A.I.? Or me on half the salary? But no - him and his chums can still ponce about, telling the rest of us how greedy and selfish we are just for looking for some kind of inflation-related pay rise, while filling their boots and ignoring the economic reality. Incompetence or corruption? You tell me. I wouldn't give him a job flipping burgers. But his mates went to the right Uni.

I'm so sick of the whole corrupt system. We need to start chopping heads off. For realsy.

PS - fordm - your decision to leave this country was inspired. I'm hoping to join you at some point (not Switzerland - Norway for me.).

...rise today, given the better-than-expected results. I'm not too bothered though, for me it just means I am less worried than I was week ago, and more confident going forward (macro events excepted) - it's just a matter of patience. I'm not buying or selling, just happy to hold what I have for as long as it takes.
Anyway, us artificial lifeforms ( or robots, as we used to be called) don't really do feelings or emotions, so it doesn't really affect me that way, although even a robot has living expenses, and bills to pay. That WD40 is extortionate.

IAG longterm - thanks for the update, but how bonkers is it that this is only happening now? Insane is in the rear view mirror.
It used to be that the throwaway phrase "the worlds gone mad" was just an expression of frustration.
Now it's a statement of fact.

What the hell happened there? I only left the house for an hour, and the price drops off a cliff. Was having a pleasant enough day - sun out, shares rising - sorted. Now it has, both literally and metaphorically, clouded over - as has my mood.
Had intended to have an alcohol free day, but can't see that happening now.
