I've just re-read the Motley Fool article … You're absolutely right.
When I came across the following the first time, I just dismissed it as completely idiotic and didn't pay it much attention;-

"In the worst case scenario, Hurricane could lose the Aoka Mizu or accidentally cause a giant oil spill."

I was more annoyed at the his idea that implied that Hurricane were somehow to blame for the rope problems and were therefore an incompetent company.

I think the writer was probably right, there could be the odd problem up ahead.
But to say that the rope failures are a foreboding of things to come is just ridiculous.
They were problems waiting for a solution … it's when you have problems with no foreseeable solution (such as SOLAN) that we will need to worry.

I found your post very interesting and fully agree … even though it did shoot down my theory of being able to make a guess at the initial flow rates.
On the other hand, I still maintain that there will not be any real movement in the SP ( except for a flutter as Mozza said) at first oil and that real excitement will not be until after off-loading starts to happen.
That's when the big boys will start to get interested … it's they who move the SP not us small PIs.

… I was just about to post something similar myself.

The AOKA MIZU can store about 604000 barrels of Oil in 11 different tanks.
This is approx. 55000 barrels per tank.
When the first nine tanks have been filled there will be almost enough to fill the off-loading tanker which can hold 500000 barrels.
It's at this point that I feel the real excitement will happen and the SP should (hopefully) make a big jump.
The ship-watchers will keep us informed as soon as it is on its way to the AM. … unless the AIS coincidently goes off line again!

Also by dividing 500000 by number of days after FOIL will give us an approx. idea of the average daily flow-rate.

When I watched that video of the Peregrino that missdosh posted, I seem to remember that they changed most of the crew once the ship had become moored to the buoy.
I used to have a lobster boat and used to find it strange on dry land after just a couple of days at sea.

You were right John … it just went into the red.
What a sad way to end what looked like it was going to be a great day!

It would seem that the AM was hanging around most of the day about 6nm from the buoy until those 2 auxiliary vessels had finished whatever they were doing for several hours at the buoy.

I think that they were probably replacing the old rope.

I hate to sound rude but that's a load of codswallop.
Those connectors have nothing to do with the pulling in and latching of the buoy to the AM.
They were used to attach the mooring lines to the buoy last summer and, as far as we know, none of these connectors have failed.

From animations and videos that I've seen of similar Buoys, the rope is about 40 odd metres long with a couple of small floats fixed about halfway. This serves 3 purposes.

1) Indicates where the buoy is located.
2) Keeps the rope afloat so it is easier to retrieve
3) Indicates when the winch is about to take up full load as they (the floats) appear in the moon pool.

What happens when they reach the winch … haven't a clue..

I know I've pushed this theory many times before (and no-one seems to agree with me) but I still think they are going to need an auxiliary vessel to attach the rope to the Buoy.
I doubt that it will be the Olympic Zeus because it is doing a test run at the moment off the coast of Denmark at Frederikshavn.

Thanks for the info Chislehurst but I already have an account with Hargreaves Lansdown which gives me live quotes.
It's just that I found the moving graph on the Telegraph quite interesting … which I don't get with HL..

The Telegraph have a new site (new to me anyway) showing trades with 15 min delay.
There is a good graph that's updated (15 min delay) so you can watch it being drawn.
