The other thing to bear in mind is that holding 100 or more CCL shares gives you an immediate increase to the on board credit that comes with every Carnival cruise. The extra amount varies by length of cruise. In £Stg it’s £150 for two weeks or more, £60 for 7-13 nights and £30 for 4-6 nights, I think.

I listened to the webcast and read the submission to the SEC and I could not believe the reaction, swiftly corrected, but nonetheless unwarranted. We don’t do the casino so have no awareness of what we might have missed out on!

Anyway, we have taken our courage in both hands and booked a week on Iona to Norway which includes my birthday. Never been on a vessel that size!

Anyone any tips on best eaterie etc.?

They don’t usually ask for confirmation of share ownership until about three weeks before sailing to counter that very problem!

If you’re with HL, as I am with my SIPP, they notify Carnival for you. They have what I can only call a “Share Perks” team who handle this along with discounts and vouchers etc.

Makes life easy. Just have to tell them your booking ref (6 characters) and the cruise no. and ship.

We have just beeped a week on Iona to Norway at the end of next month. It’ll either be a great success or abject failure. Either way, a new adventure!

We went for a Conservatory Mini Suite on Deck 9. No suites left, sadly.

You think the lenders don’t know a solid bet when they see one, papalaz? The debt represents less than 50% of net assets and if you had bothered to look at the results for Q2, look at the forecast numbers and listen to the webcast you would understand why the SP is forging ahead.

There will, of course, be profit takers but the trajectory for this share is generally upward. The financials for the remainder of the year are pretty much set out in the Q2 statement with bookings looking ever stronger. We might get to £15 if Q3 is better than expected. I get the feeling that the debt is not so much of an issue now. Would have like to have been a fly on the wall at the meeting with the analysts yesterday.

Can I put in a plea for politeness to all from all, please? Everyone is entitled to their view and must take responsibility for it. I doubt if anyone on here follows anyone else’s actions or advice (if it is even that!).

I agree it’s a serious business but, as the saying goes, if you can’t afford to lose, don’t bet!

Learningtoinvest - do you seriously think the bean counters haven’t been all over the numbers here? Those institutions who have lent money to Carnival are not stupid either - especially for the amounts involved. 80% of the remaining debt is on fixed rates and $8 - 9bn will be paid down by 2026 leaving about $20bn. The debt already represents well under 50% of net assets. The only downside at present is its relationship to Market Cap where it is around 175%. But since MC is so volatile, that should hardly be a bother, frankly.

Medium to long term, this is a share to be in.

Thanks Stupmy. I think that “assets” are at book value, though, not current. I do understand your point. Market Cap just seems so much more volatile and it, too, might be related back to “underlying net assets” otherwise there’s a possibility that the SP could drop to zero, e.g. as with Cineworld where, I understand, they didn’t own any of their cinemas so have now gone into administration, looking for a buyer and staying open in the meantime.

Some have compared it to CCL but I can’t see it myself.

BTW, we only started cruising because other, better half has terrible ear problems when flying, taking up to 48 hours to recover from only a 2-hour “hop”. So, we tried ten days to the Canaries in 2010 on Oriana, grand old P & O lady, on the basis that if we found we hated it after three or four days, we only had a week before we got off. Since then, apart from COVID, we have done roughly one a year, sometimes two.

Some on here seem to always on one ship or another! Bot must be due back soon. Be interesting to hear what he felt about yesterday.

I have now seen two analyses that compare Carnival’s debt to its Capitalisation. This seems a very odd thing to do because market cap. can be extremely volatile, as we saw yesterday. Surely, it should be related to assets? Currently less than 50% of net assets. My numbers earlier now look a bit high. The consensus seems to be that debt is now around $29bn, expecting to pay down 8 - 9 bn over the next three years. With more ships/capacity coming on stream after that, the remaining debt should be paid off relatively quickly. Return to profitability next year should also boost things.

I can only put yesterday down to profit taking.

The US price has dropped from $16 to $14.5, roughly 10%, and we are down 12%. If it was going to really tank to the sort of level everyone feared, I think it would have done that already but listening to the webcast today, they were not just saying that the Q2 results were satisfactory.

A small amount of debt has been paid down and they have a plan in place to pay down at least $8bn by the end of 2026. That would leave approx $25bn outstanding, say, another five years to reduce that to a nominal/acceptable level. In the meantime, all indicators for the next three years are strongly positive. Even the analysts acknowledge that.

The doomsayers have it wrong.

I agree with Topo- there has always been manipulation of this share and it continues. There is no justification for a drop of 11%+ on the basis of today’s results. So, just gotta be patient. Day trading far too risky for my taste.

The CEO and CFO are still taking questions from brokers/analysts. They are all very positive. Hang in there!
