RE: When interest rates go up following America this month, lots of pensioners gain income to spend on Carnival cruises8 Sep 2023 16:04
Squidgy, I had taken a different interpretation of Haute’s “interest rates”.Yes, this is the month HMG use to determine the increase in State Pensions and other benefits next April. My Father-in-law used to call this hid “free money” - that was in the days when he went weekly to the Post Office to collect it. I guess the same applies today, although it mysteriously appears in the bank account every four weeks, i.e. 13 times a year. So, there is always a month when one gets two payments. That certainly helps towards a cruise fare when all other budgeting is done monthly!
I took Haute to be talking about income from savings. It is a real pain to move cash about just to get and extra couple of basis points on cash savings unless you have the right accounts already set up. The banks rely on this, of course.
Having said all that, P & O and Cunard do not seem to go for the kinds of special offers that you see on Princess or Holland America.
Anyway, thank you for your comment. I am (figuratively) holding my breath until 27th.
