Altyn is a company that does some very odd things - or things that appear odd to me. One is to release results on a Friday afternoon before a bank holiday, when presumably 'everyone' has left to avoid the bank holiday traffic. Bizarre!
Perhaps it is because the management are based in Kazakhstan where it might be early in the morning....but still.

Here's a freebie Altyn, don't release results on a Friday at 4:20pm, especially before a bank holiday....unless you want to hide terrible or dodgy information. Bizarre...especially when the results look quite good. I must have missed something?!

PS No mention of dividends that I can see. Wasn't really expecting any, but I live in hope.

We do a lot of 'crazy' things just because it is cheap or convenient. The environmental cost of the products we use needs to be incorporated into the prices we pay. It is the only way we will realise that cheap isn't necessarily best. Perhaps local but 'slightly' more expensive would be better.

Exactly right. We cannot kill the planet, we can only make it more difficult for ourselves to live the lives we want to lead.

Also the consumption of resources used in the shift to low carbon is 'probably' underestimated. An investment opportunity...assuming one can choose the right commodity or industry to bet upon.

Hardly a surprise...turkeys don't vote for Xmas!

Carbon capture 'probably' has a part to play....it depends on the efficiency. What will 'probably' happen is that the shift to low carbon tech will be like an avalanche, slow at the start but once it really gets going it will be unstoppable. As the cost of the technology decreases it will 'probably' be punitive to run a business or house using carbon hungry infrastructure.....government taxes could also accelerate the shift (IF politicians & governments choose to apply them).

50/33 payback from electrolysis doesn't appear too bad!! Obviously if the efficiency can be improved that would be great, but it is probably workable.....as long as you can get the power used in electrolysis from low carbon sources (wind or solar). What is the efficiency of battery power?

Will share buybacks help prepare RDSB for a potentially rapid transition to cleaner forms of energy - or likely increasing pace over the next decade?
Perhaps it is time for management to make a significant strategic 'investment' in low carbon technologies using the post-covid bonus, if it materialises. Buy-backs may indicate Shell management don't have any clear vision on how to prepare for the low carbon future.

A daft idea....much like the ESL done purely for greed. Imagine in Rick's cafe they are all drinking Budweiser lager. Just plain silly & pointless.

Boyobach, thanks for the description of your trading philosophy. I would like to do something similar but don't really have the time or energy. So I buy and forget...certainly not the best approach & I miss lots of opportunities to get my average down by trading.

Boyobach, to trade the shares you have to be fairly confident of the trading range. Worse case is you sell all the shares and there is a re-rating higher.
Do you trade a percentage of your holding or do you go 'the whole hog'?

Looks like the day traders (short term investors) are coming on board ahead of the results/production update. You can almost set your watch by them!!
Hopefully some will hang around a bit longer than is normal and the SP will get a long term re-rating.

What a lazy and misleading use of terminology. Like the market is really susceptible to some post lunch boozed up 'slip of the finger' mis-typed mistake (at 8am in the morning)!! It is either absurd or very concerning....I suspect it is designed to make us feel 'happy' that the market is basically well run by honourable 'old school' types who are only susceptible to honest mistakes, aka a 'fat finger'.

But instead we have:
- Hedge funds 'investing' sizeable amounts in high speed computers links to gain a few micro-seconds advantage...gawd only knows why.
- People like the 'hound of Hounslow' causing flash crashes from his parents semi-detached in West London.....didn't he pay his fine, was it £10m, from his Swiss bank account?! Not exactly the picture of a lucky amateur I had imagined.
It's a wonder they didn't call it 'the Fickle Finger of Fate'!!

Obviously.
OPEC+ have increased production quotas based on orders placed with oil refineries, so we know oil usage will increase in the next few months (or it is foreccast to increase).
But a short term increase in oil demand isn't necessarily going to pave the way for increases in shareholder dividends....or is it?
SP might get a boost towards £17 but will it take us over £20? Doesn't the market look for long to medium term prospects?....here the future (at the moment) is a little hazy (IMO).
What does the post-Covid landscape look like for Shell?....perhaps the 'energy transition strategy' will answer that.

Sharefall, you may well be correct.
My understanding of the scientific consensusis that we (humans) will be in a very sticky place unless we stop using fossil fuels. The major economic powers have I think realised that 'fact' and that shifting to green energy could also provide an economic & job boost. So 'IF' the politicians set the targets AND make them legally binding the transition to low carbon tech could be speedy. Lots of IF's however and politicians usually get scared (at least in the UK) when they realise it will be costly and voters may not like changing their lifestyles.

Sharefall, I agree that the shift towards 'cleaner' technologies will be slower - especially in developing countries - than some people are predicting or hoping for. In vast parts of the world new technologies aren't cost effective or reliable enough.
But the shift in richer nations could be dramatic (IMO). And the cost of those technologies will fall (look at the cost of solar panels).
It could be that oil companies become like tobacco companies....getting a significant part of revenues from developing countries whilst being regulated/taxed heavily in the 'West'. At some point supply could significantly outstrip demand and organisations like OPEC+ fracture, not a given but a possibility.
In the short term SHell (and other oilers) have a window of opportunity to prepare for a 'green new world'.

I suppose the value of RDSB depends on the answers to a number of new questions that have become apparent since the pandemic. Perhaps they have existed for some time. But now they are obvious.....made obvious by the reduction in dividend payments. The 'good times' for Shell shareholders seem to be on hold until SHell can answer the problems posed by the pandemic (short term) and the environment (longer term). Perhaps Shell management will find the answers quickly or perhaps it will take longer. The market may also weight the problems differently....perhaps an answer to short term economic uncertainty (a post covid roaring twenties) will outweigh the question mark on SHell's revenues posed by climate change.

Bring back national service in the military too!

NSS, it wasn't my comment that OP is being kept 'articifially' high, was someone else on here. I was just repeating what they said (I should have quoted them...sorry about that).
Not sure what you mean by "quite a lot of oil". Is 'quite a lot' enough for SHell to reach profitability and hopefully increase shareholder payments?
I believe that demand is well below where it was at start of 2020 and also below pre-covid forecasts. But 'apparently' demand is showing signs of increasing and OPEC+ have increased the production their members are 'allowed' to pump. So things are improving for oil producers. Whether we will reach pre-covid levels - or even get a bit of an economic short term boom - is $ million question!
