1 fibre carries 140 wave lengths. These are separated not by electronics but a passive device, splitting these wave lengths into 140 outputs

Each cable has 300 fibres so one cable will support 140 times 300 premises, require 300 passive splitters (so that’s 42000 premises per cable laid in a micro trench

You can lay several cable per trench

That’s lots. Each fibre can carry different data rates depending on coding up to 500 Gbit/s to the home.

Each cable has hundreds of fibres. Each fibre is broken out to a passive device which splits each wave length to a distribution frame to a fibre in the home / business. Up to 140 wave lengths. So one cable will be 140 time 300 properties. Several cables per trench. When this is exhausted a cabinet is needed to access the back bone & it starts again

Fleccy - still not reading it are you. There’s no need to wait. From sky’s what could be in it for sky is day one the get access to 54% of U.K. premises increasing with expansion. With BT day one they get access to way less than 10% now & less than 30% by 2025 - 30.....

Also go look up Brian Roberts, big clue is chairman & ceo of comcast & they share private jet journeys together !!!

Hi NDN - yes it is interesting & I’m not pretending to have all the answers & I’m not sure I understand the street furniture argument entirely

What I do know is this is pretty much how virgin have spent their £3bln last couple of years. I also know a deal with Comcast will deliver very deep pockets.

I also suspect it won’t need a full national build if the aim is speed rather than technology? Because 54% of premises can already (about to) get more than a Gbt ..... so I make that 46% of a national build.

All the civils, rules and regulations, they must already be dealing with these in order to deliver their current expansion plans?

It’s a real possibility. I still can’t understand why virgin would invite sky in to their customer base, but maybe the longer plan is much much bigger?

Fleccy - I’ve already explained why I think Comcast are not a fit with BT’s network.

Current cable option is not entirely taking masses of BT customers, but it does take some. The whole point is SKY does kill BT customers. SKY offering these speeds and services will take business

Whether I or anyone else wants those speeds is another irrelevance. I’ve already explained sky want it to replace satellite delivery. The BB speed customers will be on top of these potential loses.

I’m open to a discussion, but you really have to try and understand my point, before you fire back a contrary argument that doesn’t address the actual point

What I think is grants from government are not part of this battle if it comes. Grants are for low end remote areas that Boone wants

The battle grounds are the densely populated areas, where of course the cable industry already have covered with Gbt broadband coverage. This makes the head start 54% coverage compared to the 6% openreach coverage

This imo is the consideration, not grants, not man covers.

I think you are right, the big but here is in tandem with all these events, press is reporting government & regulator “will not” use its powers to discourage new investment / entrants. I read this as not imposing equal access responsibilities & not letting BT off the leash enabling them to disadvantage new entrants

I also see this as part of a major discussion during trade deals with America. Focus is on drugs, nhs and chlorinated chicken, but I’m guessing John Malone will be all over trying to gain advantage. The U.K. telecoms industry is such an obvious win during these negotiations, liberty & Comcast I have no doubt will be all over it

So my view is yes, that relaxation on Bt would be fair, but I’m not sure that will be a consideration & Boris is a coward & From all his options this looks like the easiest concession to make imo

Fleccy - so you have gone from dismissing these new innovative methods of laying fibre used by VM to now accepting they are used every where by everyone

So back to the discussion, Virgin have a very fast network coverage of 54% premises whereas Bt are very behind

Sky need this bandwidth & might not want to wait for openreach & it’s likely their parent company is putting pressure to move towards a cable based infrastructure

Is this a fair set of observations actually based on evidence / opinion

I think these are the figures which should be used on this thread. But we don’t know how far through the tensing 46% Liberty can grow their faster network in the next 5 years but could find out soon

Bo - yep you’re right, I’m not in this industry, but my skills are to think through detail and come to a conclusion.

I don’t know if bt are in trouble or not? I have a view of the mounting competition in the wholesale market & based on the logic in my previous post I can assess the risk

I still hold big numbers of BT shares. It’s a discussion , that’s what I see, those are the reasons & there’s the logic I’m using with a brief indication of actual fact (ie what’s actually happening on the ground) & of course what the heck has trench size got to do with maintenance ports / man holes ?...

A bit of research from me suggests cable operators like Comcast hate the idea of ADSL in any form

DOCSIS is something they leave and breathe, I can see Comcast now pushing sky towards a model of operation akin to cable deployments for both practical and ideological reasons.

We also know Sky to get away from satellites, so the two things seem to come together nicely

Lastly far as I can tell, the bit I don’t understand is what happens to virgin? I can’t get my head round opening their current and future customer base to SKY services..... my gut feel is they will out compete them?

The digs to exchanges / hubs nationally are already done

Network expansion is the name of the game, this means extending current access networks

I think the correct response from you should be yes, they are capable of doing this work & during the trial managed 5 to 6 homes per minute.

There’s no ifs or buts. Liberty has the ability to deliver this through Virgin Media if Comcast come in with the money & it is only 46% of the remaining premises they need to concentrate on because they can already offer Gbt speed to 56% of premises......

This I think is a fair description of where these 2 competing networks are today & tells a different tale to some of the bluster on here
