When my birthday next rolls around (being a 'sceptic' i should say 'if' - i don't count my chickens before they hatch) I very much hope that i shall find a better way to celebrate it than with multiple posting on this or any BB.

I don't detect any attempts to silence anyone, certainly not from QBT sceptics.

I wouldn't say that either the enthusiasts or the septics holds the high ground either. Just different points of view.

There is probably a temperamental divide too. The enthusiasts tend to be rather earnest,, self satisfied, and po faced, whereas the sceptics tend to be more light hearted, questioning, and irreverent. That may be mainly a reflection of the SP and the repeated failures of QBT to fulfil their (and its own) commercial expectations. It is understandable that anyone invested and sitting on a substantial loss is weighed down a bit by that and prone to resent any post which makes it more difficult to find the confirmation and comfort he looks for.

OSD - 'Everybody likes me'.

It appears that his mentor is probably David Lammy. That is what Lammy said when in it was put to him that he would find it difficult to work amicably with the USA under Trump after being rather rude about him. He went on to 'prove' his assertion by stating that when he had dinner with him, Trump offered him a second helping of chicken, so he must like him. Impeccable logic. OSD will not go far wrong with Lammy for a mentor.

Still, it might help if he lays off the booze a bit. 'When the wine is in, the wits are out ' and all that, and the Greeks can be touchy..

That Ouzo is pretty wicked stuff.

As for the 'Dettol', personally, I am not fond of retsina either, but I would not go as far as to liken it to Dettol, certainly not in a Greek taverna.. The taverna owner may cut up nasty at that description of his house wine. 'Dettol' is not a term one is accustomed to see in wine tasting notes. Something along the lines of 'the freshness of pine' would be more tactful.

Did you congratulate Andreas on his success, and tell him he is a shining streak of gold in the surrounding darkness, and that it is a pleasure when he arrives and painful when he departs?

If so, I hope he reacted to such compliments more agreeably than you did, OSD.

He challenged me to match or exceed his posts. When i pointed out that was hardly a fair contest because he already had 3000+ posts to his name before I joined the board he very decently changed to a new handle, so that we would start all square.

I hadn't appreciated how competitive he is though. I posted a short complimentary response to his sermon today, and got back a lengthy load of abuse!

Every constructive post I have made since has got a similar response. Competition doesn't need to be antagonistic.

May i suggest a bit of carrot as well as stick though? How about a promise to take them to the beach too next Sunday, if they behave themselves?

PS It is '..try to educate...' , not '...try and educate'.... A small point which may seem pedantic, but it isa as well to be careful not to lead the young into bad habits.

Maidit loved the sermon, which counts as a plus, and I expect you are right that the performance of the alter boys will improve with time and experience, but there is a fairly widespread feeling that you need to think again about the 'Bells and Smells'. Out of date ouzo and Dettol? Hmm.

A lot of others did enjoy the Monty Python sketches though, and felt no need to arm themselves with Detol before tuning in. To my mind, it is your loss that you were not one of them.
