Had a substantial AV holding for years, thanks to SAYE. Waited patiently watching the PRU sail past but earlier this year I sold half and bought into the PRU at 1855 to give me a foot in both camps. Aviva for the dividend and PRU in the hope of growth. Of course shortly after the PRU decided to split itself without warning me so I've no idea how that will pan out.. Going to just leave well alone now till further news comes along. The rest of my stocks aren't in insurance, it's too boring.

Looking back, it's still low.

The Chief Financial Officer of GSK just announced his retirement.. Seems a bit young at 53.

My feeling is the same and since I have the opportunity to take a decent profit at this price level I have done so.

It's reported that British banks have not done nearly enough to increase their capital buffers as prescribed by Basel III. It seems to me that HSBC with a CET1 ratio of >14% is more than adequately funded. Any comments?

I'd suggest the difference in p/e ratios might be because the Pru is retaining earnings to fund growth to a greater extent than Aviva is. There was little difference in the SP 10 years ago. Today the Pru's sp is three times what it was whereas Aviva's sp is actually LOWER than back then. I am the mug who backed Aviva.:-( Maybe the extra dividend helped a bit but still,, And the CEO is a factor - Aviva had Moss in charge when they could have had Thiam but the Pru nicked him off them.

Bought a few more at 699 which looking back a year is ok. It is the only bank I hold for my sins (apart from a tiny Santander stake that seems to have crept in somehow and isn't worth enough to sell).

Abuse is usually a sign of defeat in my experience. It's very unrewarding reading many of the posts on this board since they are clearly made by people whose main motivation is to ramp the share rather than provide useful insights. Tesco is not an attractive proposition as it is in a situation where it has had to surrender the lead it once had and is now trying to play catch up against rivals which are better placed. The game in which it was once such a strong player is over. The fact that it must have many shareholders nursing a considerable loss from the glory days makes 'buy' advice very suspect.

Sainsbury has a mountain to climb with this merger which is brought on by structural changes in the industry as Rocka999 says. It looks to me that Ocado is the one with the head start and greatest expertise in what has become a different ball game. Ocado should be able to capitalise on the battles between the big hitters as the latter spend time and money making sense of a post merger disentanglement and repositioning their customer offerings.

Obviously this board has a high number of Tesco shareholders who bought during the glory days when �4 was the norm and �5 the peak. Earlier this year I suggested they might cut their losses after all this time and run the measure over alternatives. For example Sainsbury, whose share today has hung on to a 14% gain since the merger announcement. Did Tesco ever have a 40% gain over Booker?

Having just sold out of an insurer at what I believe is the top of their run I was really considering Tesco and what happens? This simply demonstrates to me that domestic retail is a structurally changing minefield for investors like myself. I'm staying out of the conventional stuff. Nothing I read here makes me feel otherwise.

For good or ill, I imagine US capital will be seeking further buying opportunities after Brexit. Our ASDA store is right next door to Sainsbury - which one will suffer? Both are full-sized operations.

When I had certificates, i.e. before going 'electronic', my share certificates were a mixture of CGU, CGNU and Aviva. All were valid as they weren't ever replaced by Aviva certificates. Therefore I would expect your CGNU certificate to be valid too.

Bizarrely the BBC has this as xd TODAY : "Aviva x 487.60p -14.80 -2.95 " Aviva's own site quite clearly shows it as tomorrow.
