All this talk about the downfall of the West and a new global order isn’t taking into consideration the most important consideration that’s going to shape this century. Demographics. 15 of the most populated countries in the world have berth rate at, or below, replacement rate. 3 of the 5 that don’t are in Africa. By 2050 china will have over 500 million people over the age of 60 and a population shrinking by more than 15 million a year. That’s a quicker death rate than WW2. With a population that isn’t having enough kids to replace them. Russia and China have about the worst demographics in the world. But Putin likes to talk about this new world order. The most successful economies of this century will be those that can attract the most people. Open democratic societies, if they can over come populism. Of course India, if it opens it economy to the world could be the superpower of this century. Young smart society. China, Russia- the BRICS will be as dead as the EU idea with 10-15 years. As for replacing the U.S. dollar. No chance.

There isn’t going to be any peace until Putin is dead or gone. He isn’t going to suddenly become a decent bloke upon some kind of cease fire or peace deal. It’s the Russian/Kremlin mentality that’s the problem. They have all the land in the world, don’t do anything with 95% of it, but think it’s normal behaviour to try and take someone else’s country. If that means killing millions of people then so be it. Putin calls it his ‘Logic’. The Anglo Saxons recognise it as ‘backward’.

I think Putin would be very reluctant to give up the territory he’s taken. The Russians have been selling off property there cheap. Moving Russians in and Ukrainians out. The same as they did in Crimea. Mass graves around Mariupol etc. All will come to light if they pulled out. How many people have just gone missing from those areas?

It’s also unlikely the Europeans are going to forgive and forget war crimes. What would a peace treaty involve? Putin returning to the world stage like nothing has happened? I don’t think so.

Why would Trump do that and why would Ukraine agree to that? That’s not peace talks it’s surrender. Ukraine doesn’t need Trump for that.

Trump would go into peace talks from a position of strength. Leave the Donbas, keep Crimea and Ukraine won’t join NATO for 15 years. Agree to that or we’ll double aid to Ukraine and they’ll be in NATO within the next year, for example.

All this talk about peace talks but where would that leave Putin? All war crimes chargers dropped? Sanctions dropped? It’s unlikely anyone is going to back to business as usual as long as he’s alive. The West should just foot the bill and give Ukraine what it needs to drive Russia out. 1000 main battle tanks, with sufficient air support. Then maybe his own people will take care of him.

Trump is already a dictator. Fall in line with his rubbish or get ridiculed and driven out of your position. How many prominent republicans are now backing him, basically because they have no choice, but deep down wish he'd taken a head shot the other day? A second Trump term will be a disaster. One point to note is that maritime traffic has dropped off a lot over the last 4 -6 weeks. I started recording the cape size vessels that went into port. Haven't seen one for about 6 weeks now. This could be due to electrical supply at the port. Having worked in the maritime industry for a short while, going into ports in say Africa, could take significantly longer to load/unload due to irregular electricity supply. Than it would in Europe or China. I fear this may be the case here.

Think you might be right Cleverthoughts. I don't know why people think Trump will suddenly work some magic and end the war either. He's more likely to course division between the US and Europe and NATO. Exactly what Putin wants.
