I don't think Putin can end this war by choice. As soon as he does, him and his cronies will be branded war criminals, a massive diplomatic effort will start to isolate him further. Anyone befriending him or doing business with him will be named and shamed for associating themselves with a war criminal. The only reason he hasn't been already is because then he'll have nothing to lose.

I think a lot will depend on who wins the US election. If sleepy Joe does then I think he'll eventually give Ukraine what it needs to win. Russia will soon be at capacity when it comes to producing more kit and the old soviet stock piles will be gone. If Trump wins then who knows.

Somethings happening inside the Kremlin, purging generals, new defence minister, Putin signalling he wants to freeze the conflict, Gazprom reporting a record loss. Why do all this now, over 2 years into the invasion? It’s not like things are going to improve for Russia. 500,000 dead and wounded milestone approaching.
