I can’t see Q4 production report to be very strong. It said in the end of year message that Q1 had been the best quarter of the year. I’m happy just to stay a float until the war comes to an end.

Ferrexpo ‘compelling’, says Marlborough duo

Ukraine-based miner Ferrexpo (FXPO) has proved it is adept at operating profitably and its share price is ‘compelling’, says Marlborough managers Guy Feld and Eustace Santa Barbara.

The pair hold the Citywire Elite Companies + rated iron ore miner, with assets solely in Ukraine, in their £550m Marlborough UK Micro Cap Growth fund.

A strong rally in the shares has boosted the fund of late despite concerns about the war in Ukraine weighing on the group.

‘Ferrexpo’s assets are solely in Ukraine and there has been a widely held view that these assets could become stranded due to the ongoing conflict with Russia,’ said the managers.

‘While this remains a risk, the company has proved adept at operating in a flexible and profitable manner, as highlighted by a recent production report.’

They believe the current share price presents ‘a compelling risk-reward opportunity given the current valuation’.

The shares gained 1.3% to 102.1p on Friday and are up 27% over the past 12 months. However, they have lost nearly three-quarters of their value since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022.

By the looks of it the effect has been minimal. In my humble opinion the FXPO share price moves on two main themes. The price of Iron Ore and the obvious war/ geopolitical situation. One is fundamental, the other is speculation on what might happen in the future with the war.

There was news yesterday from Trump acknowledging any peace process will be more complicated than he thought. I think the initial optimism of Trump is fading and any kind of peace looking less likely. At least in the short term.

That’s very true. There will be no peace while Putin is alive. Soon as the west realises this the better. Seize the Russian assets Putin was stupid enough to leave in Europe and use it to buy weapons for Ukraine. It’s the only way.

I agree with you both. Stock threads shouldn't be the place for political rants. If you do feel like making your point then make it and move on. But the fact of the matter is Russia has an ongoing campaign to spread lies and disinformation. Free chat boards and social media are obvious platforms for them to try and achieve this. The regulators in the West should be doing more to counter this. And the likes of me and you should be picking them up every time they enter our space to spread these lies.

What risks on the balance sheet are you talking about? The business has come through all this with no debt. Balance sheet looks good to me and I doubt it will take long to ramp up production.

For those of us who remember this company before the Russian scum invaded, when the share price was around £3 a share. It was trading on an earnings multiple of around 2-3. So at those levels it was cheap. Probably because the threat from Russia was always there. A peace treaty signed with proper security guarantees and production back to 2021 levels would make that price look cheap again. If you didn't get in when it was down a 40p then that's bad luck. Obviously with the risks that we all know about.
