C.Eng,
"When I was looking into this a little more it got me trying to read about permeability anisotropic properties as the ratio of vertical to horizontal permeability and how lower ratio is best for production and high ratio leads to greater water breakthrough. But then I read that in horizontal wells a high vertical permeability is linked to higher PI? This appears contradictory?"
Yes.
I'm going way out of my domain here, but my understanding of things discovered so far.
I'd agree that there that there are certain contradictions coming to light, and they do raise certain questions. Lancaster 6 was certainly the most 'conciensciously-drilled' well, and the best of the lot. But equally, the 'well 7' DST was the best result. But then that was sidetracked to make '7z', it is obvious that the directional drilling for it to be a 'horizontal' was shoddy, to say the least (probably due to 'go-fever'), and went way off-target. Dr Trice might be a s**t-hot geologist, but doesn't know jack about directional drilling. Unfortunately. Or at least, he may do in theory, but when he's out on the rig looking at rock samples, he's not bossing the DD's at the same time.
But hey, nobody's perfect.
My (gut) feeling is that there's nothing wrong with what's going on, regarding production, and getting things more 'stable', and thus progressing the field. But yet again, there's macroeconomics, CV19, etc...
