Successful demonstration of surface mountable supercapacitor products

CAP-XX has successfully demonstrated a range of new surface mountable supercapacitor products at its Lane Cove manufacturing facility in Australia. The SMT ("surface mount technology") devices have been developed to meet customer requests for supercapacitors which can be mass assembled using standard reflow solder techniques.

The devices, which were demonstrated in working prototype form were sent though a standard reflow solder oven at 260 C with minimal change in ESR (electrical series resistance) and capacitance. The specification of the demonstration devices was ESRs of 60 and 100 milli Ohms and capacitances of 1.0 Farads and 0.5 Farads with rated voltages of 2.75V and 5.5V respectively. After reflow the ESRs and capacitances had changed by less than 10%.

The potential introduction of a SMT variant is anticipated to hasten adoption of current generation devices as handset makers develop supercapacitor enabled power architectures in high end feature phones, before introducing to high volume platforms.

Anthony Kongats, CEO, CAP-XX said:

"Developing a high power surface mountable supercapacitor with the CAP-XX characteristics of thin, small form factor has been the holy grail for the mobile phone handset industry. The preservation of performance demonstrated in these trials meets the potential demands of this important core target customer group "

Notes to Editors:

CAP-XX is a world leader in the design and manufacture of thin-form supercapacitors and power management systems, predominantly for portable electronic devices.

The unique feature of CAP-XX's supercapacitors is their ability to store high volumes of energy and output high power levels within a thin-form design. These attributes will be critical for the next generation of high volume, power-hungry portable electronic devices, including mobile phones and solid state drives.

Portable devices are one of the fastest growing segments of the electronics market and provide the greatest opportunities for CAP-XX's products. CAP-XX's products are already an established enabling technology for the current generation of wireless devices.
