What's more important is today vs Pre-Covid as a more accurate picture of performance. That is the underlying move from bricks and mortar retail to online as more traditional businesses fail.

Jotom - They are not my Tories. Who have I displayed 'hatred' for? That's quite a strong term to use. It's all about how you spin things.

What you have to remember is that in 2010 the government had to start from a position of having zero cash. They had to spend the first two terms improving (non fixing) the public finances. It's very hard to improve services and implement change with your hands tied behind your back financially. They've spent record amounts on the NHS but it is not and will never be enough. Medical advances cost more, an ageing population costs more and will keep getting more expensive. I ready that 80% of someone's NHS cost comes after the age of 75.

One could argue that over the last 4 years the government have been dealt a terrible hand - Covid, Russian war, affects of decade long monetary policy. It's unlikely any government would have come out of that lot unscathed. I certainly don't think Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Diane Abbot would have had a better handle on it.

COVID was bad but the furlough saved the country from millions of redundancies, the vaccine rollout was faster than anywhere else on the planet.

The current government are going through the same scenario that Gordon Brown's government went. In power for far too long, lack of ideas and also decent fresh faces coming through. It's just shame there isn't the talent on both sides to have a better solution to the current status quo.

PeePee - Think of market share as a pie chart. You need the total turnover of the market or at least the largest players and then work out whether in each case you have gross or net sales so you are comparing apples with apples.

Then if you want to look purely at fast fashion in the case of Boohoo you need to strip out all of the turnover for the non-fast fashion businesses - same as all the competitors.

So once the pandemic hit the total pie got bigger and then pie has since decreased as normal shopping behaviour came back and also cost of living, etc, took hold. So what matters is not whether individual companies turnover has gone up or down but what their percentage of that pie is throughout each period you are looking at.

The problem you'll have it that you won't be able to find Shein's turnover, you'll have no clue no doubt if you're dealing with gross or net sales, etc.

On the creative side though, you can’t get analytics do that.

PeePee - what are Sheins margins? How much profit are they making? Surely the same for Boohoo applies to them?

This is the problem PeePee when you don’t understand the numbers and make grandiose statements without the slightest knowledge to back them up - constantly repeating them over and over doesn’t count - you get pulled up on them and continue to make yourself look daft.

Your best bet it to finally let go of this share - it’s obviously lost you a ton of cash and the obsession is not healthy for you.

I would have thought an uptick in the unemployment rate would be counter intuitive in terms of avoiding recession but would be positive in terms of controlling wage inflation, although too much can obviously not be read into one months set of data.

Historically this has been the case, it's hardly a wild view. It also does not mean that I am pro tory, just cautious around investors prospects if labour get into power.

HS2 is a project long in the making - the inception of the formalisation of HS2 was actually in 2009 which was when Labour were in power. I'm an accountant - I can promise you now a project like HS2 which is so far in the future is impossible to cost. We don't know the price of copper for instance this coming week, let alone ten years + into the future or what where the FX rates will be sitting.

That's not me being pro tory just correcting your misstatements. You are high on frenzy low on actual information and facts.

At present I think he's a long way off wanting a seat at the table. I dont believe that is what he has done at his other investments.

Jot - you keep ranting bout Tories but I'm not really interested - I didn't even vote at the last general election as it was all about Brexit and nothing about policy. I can't forget the state the country was left in last time labour were in power - notes stating there's not a penny left, stealth taxes through the back door, dodgy Iraq war, cosying up to the banks and Arabs, etc. I can't stand the likes of Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell. Keir Starmer is a wet blanket - we'll be a laughing stock on the world stage.

That's no vindication of the current government though, who at this moment in time seem absolutely pointless. I don't think they can be blamed for everything though. The economy has taken knocks from COVID. Current macro factors for me date back to the banking crash when the money printing started - presided over by Gordon Brown. The current government is hardly to blame for rising retirement - this is more to do with people living longer (how poor that NHS is eh?) and the fact that the number of older people is ballooning and younger people are required to work for longer and contribute more to their own retirement (pension auto enrolment anyone?). Some of these issues span decades.
