Badgerkiller,
Brexit was a slow train that was obviously coming. What the willing Brexiteers could not see, even though it was blatantly obvious, was the false Russian social media accounts that played a huge part in influencing them. And, as sure as night follows day they made their next move. Trump didn't romp home, his share of the vote was lower than last time (it was the obstainers that seen him through.
Further to LWHL's argument:
It is riddled with contradictions and misplaced assumptions, so let’s unpack it.
First, claiming that Trump was "the only option" for anyone who cared about free speech, immigration, or public spending ignores the broader context of his actions. On free speech, Trump repeatedly attacked the press, critics, and whistleblowers, undermining First Amendment principles more often than defending them. On immigration, his policies leaned on xenophobia rather than meaningful reform. And public spending? Under Trump, the deficit ballooned to record levels, primarily due to his tax cuts for the wealthy and increased military spending. If these were your priorities, Trump hardly delivered.
Second, suggesting Elon Musk’s actions with Twitter as a model for improving governance is baffling. Musk’s chaotic mismanagement of the platform has alienated users, advertisers, and even his own staff. Applying that approach to government is a recipe for dysfunction, not improvement.
As for his posting history, it doesn't absolve his arguments of scrutiny. Criticizing someone's views isn’t libel—it’s a fundamental part of public discourse. Invoking free speech as a defense while accusing others of "sailing close to the libel wind" is both ironic and disingenuous.
Finally, on climate change: while non-Western nations play a significant role in global emissions, the UK and other Western countries bear historical responsibility for much of the current crisis. Dismissing UK efforts as insignificant is a convenient excuse for inaction. Criticizing climate conferences for their logistics doesn’t negate the urgent need for international cooperation to address the climate emergency.
In short, your defense rests on selective facts, misinterpretations, and a reliance on rhetorical distractions rather than substantive arguments.
