I don't follow the EV story closely (not as closely as some here) but the takeaways for me are: nickel is the preferred material for cathode, material diversification is purely down to cost and availability (for cheaper applications they choose a cheaper material, and arguably they might not be able to source enough nickel to fully produce to their plan). They are going to need a shedload of nickel, and it is encouraging that the biggest vehicles will need nickel.
Having the factories located on all continents and having battery manufacturing capability inside the factory with (preferred) locally sourced materials is good for Horizonte. Brazil has c200m population, by far the largest in S. America, and lots of resources. Where would you locate your factory?
Perhaps the biggest thing to thank Tesla for is they are pushing the envelope and other car manufacturers will be running just to try and keep up. They know the threat of price parity (let alone govt policy/environmental concerns) brings and if the market leader is consuming a lot of nickel all big auto will be scrambling to procure supply (of nickel).
It bodes very well for a few years time IMHO. I think there is time to get Vermelho up and running to hit the cycle, personally. I think this will accelerate fast in the next couple of years which means we will have a lot of interest in what we've got, and should also have the resultant effect on nickel price we are hoping for.
