To be fair to Chamberlain, at that time Germany were fully prepared for, and ready to go to, war. Britain would have fallen much like the rest of Europe. The breathing space Chamberlain bought was absolutely critical. Hitler himself said "I ought to have seized the initiative in 1938, instead of allowing myself to be forced into war in 1939". Whatever Chamberlain's motives, and he was deeply scarred by WW1, if he hadn't made Hitler pause for a year, we would not live in a deeply anti-semitic Europe run by and for Germany. Ok, ok, but it would be more unpleasant than it is now.
