Costain have £4.2 billion worth of forward sales already. They are the big suppliers for HS2 alongside Kier and Balfour Beatty. Kier have also had to carry out fundraising recently. Construction work of this scale has major barriers to entry. It's complex and it needs high levels of liquidity. The UK has to provide another massive stimulus once this is over to avoid a depression. The government and the whole of the developed world are showing in their actions so far that they appreciate this in their response to the crisis in my view.
We will stick to the budget and we will be ploughing on with those infrastructure projects. 4.2 billion is just the start. Costain are acting responsibly. Directors are taking a hit on salaries. They didn't have to be told to do it like the banks. They can ride this out and then the recovery will be fast and high and it will continue to consolidate well imho. The only reason not to buy now is if you think there's further to fall. There might not be. Pretty soon we will start to understand the stats about cv19 more widely, we will adopt a robust testing strategy to protect vulnerable people, to isolate ourselves during periods of confirmed infection and otherwise to go back to work and go back to living.

Nearly 300% more buys than sells now so clearly not the same buyers and sellers. Mms have lowered the sp though there's good demand.

So don't see why the share price is taking a hit.

They are probably revising or getting out of the fund raising arrangements. Since the RNS capital requirements for banks have been reduced to enable lending at historic lows to business; quantitative easing and government support for sick pay have all been introduced. The rationale for the fund raising was the capital requirements for big construction firms were looking tough in the light of last year's contract delay etc.

I am assuming they will take up some of the options the government has put on the table now and not bother taking up the funding arrangement anyway. They can get a VAT holiday, borrow at 0.1% etc

In the meantime I will stick with Costain for the medium term at least. Firms need liquidity to rise this out. Investors are just taking money from each other if they try to get onto any of your tips.

The US Congress won't approve it. Saudi Arabia and Russia are still swamping markets with cheap oil so that will be short lived. Demand for oil is plummeting right now anyway.

There are no dead certs at this point. My thinking is medium term. By September this will be over. We will start to get a sense of that in the mainstream media in the next few weeks. So we are at or near the bottom. This firm has been hit too hard because it moved quickly to ensure liquidity so that it can meet high demand for its huge projects whilst coping with some delays associated with cv19.

How is Costain badly run? They responded actively to this crisis by arranging financial cover recognising continued high demand and some extra costs associated. I suppose they could revisit the deal if government support will be cheaper.

China have reported zero new cases today. It took a while for them to respond actively and we've had their experience to learn from. So 3-4 months from the start to ensure a big slowdown in the epidemic there. This is being compared to World War 2 and we are prepared to be printing money like water in a minute- BoE announcement on Wednesday (FT). So we are going full on to offset a massive slump. Emergency measures to keep us all going then have to be followed by measures to kick start the economy. In World War 2 we built our way out of the post war slump. And it worked.

Not much buying going on anywhere for obvious reasons. But this company has 4.3 billion on it's order books. The equity raise is underwritten by HSBC. The sp fall is an overreaction. This will gain ground fast once we reach the peak and cv19 infection starts to fall. At least 100% gains to come from here within a few months. A better recovery to follow once we start adding to the order book. We have already won some of the HS2 £500 million to 3 billion value contracts and there are another 60 billion (on low estimates) still to come from that single context. That's why HSBC are guaranteeing the equity raise.

Robert Chote (OBR) has just said that this is no time to be squeamish about saving the economy. He's quoting our defecit during world war 2 (over 20% for much of it) and says we are at war with the virus. I strongly suspect we will get a massive economic stimulus announced later today. Government intervention at scale is going to be the next move. Share holders here are in the right place.

Robert Choke from the OBR is saying 'this is no time to be squeamish' about the bailout to be announced later today. I don't think Chote would be saying anything to the press without a discussion with the government. The only reason this is falling a bit is that the whole market is falling due to fears of a major recession. Cybersecurity will be a priority for support in a time of crisis. Results are due next week and we already know they'll be in profit this year.

Anyone else listening to BBC world service? The Director General of the WHO is being broadcast recommending a strategy for'Test, test, test'. Makes sense. We need to track the level of contagion and the spread. Australian critics of their government approach are saying they haven't got enough testing kits.

The Guardian reported Nicola Sturgeon's press meeting this morning. She said Scotland will be distributing 1.2 million tests through GPs. I would think Johnson will follow suit for the UK as a whole either today or under pressure to do so within the week.
