Johnathan Blake, news reporter on the BBC has just said it's 'going to be a long road' before the vaccine gets approval assuming it gets through safety trials. I hope it does. Can't say I am holding my breath now it's been reported that Pfizer's CEO has sold 60% of his shares in a pre-planned sale (August) coupled with the fact that Pfizer were fined £1.3 billion for false marketing in 2015. Not filling me with confidence.
More significant is that we have only bought enough for 30% of the UK population. No wonder Professor Van Dam can't say that we will be 'back to normal ' by Spring. Think the market is experiencing a bit of denial after the apparent good news. They need to smell the coffee. £43 billion worth of testing contracts are on the table and there is no slow down of the plans for mass testing- it's on track and picking up speed. With 2 year contracts on the table.

Incidentally, the Uk buy for the Pfizer vaccine only covers 20 million people. That's over 65s. 2/3 of us are under 65. We are an ageing population. Won't cover all over 65s because care workers and health workers are in the priority categories 1-3 as are the most 'vulnerable ' cv19 cohort.

Talking about the importance of testing to allow businesses to thrive. Just said they have been told mass testing coming in early December- he hope's they get a decision with airport testing soon so they can plan. He also just said most people won't be vaccinated for 18 months. And Twitteratti are interpreting Van Dam's press conference as meaning vaccines for vulnerable groups won't be here until Summer. I think that is different than what has been implied over the last 48 hours.

Reading that and taking the press conference from the Deputy Chief Medical officer into account, it looks like they are trying to reduce expectations about the Pfizer vaccine. We have ordered 40% of what we have ordered for AstraZeneca's candidate. Professor John Bell seems to think it's going to be impossible for most GPs to administer due to the-80 degrees storage requirement. And it's 10 x the cost of AZ's. 10 months approval schedule?
I also noticed Pfizer had a massive £1.3 billion fine from regulators for misrepresenting drugs in 2015. And their CEO sold up shares on the day of his announcement. I reckon that was a bit of a surprise to everyone too. Johnson's press conference to respond to the announcement was notably risk averse too. Not his usual gung ho style. So much to think about.

I think we will be in the mix. In Sir John Bell's interview with the Telegraph is now advocating 3 month 'freedom passports' and suggests reducing quarantine to 8 days using tests. So that will be antibody tests. He's already on record as a big fan of the RTC ABC19 antibody test which he helped to bring into being.
And Mologic meet the requirements for 'desirable' in the government specification for lateral flow antigen tests.
But as has been pointed out, if our antigen test isn't ready the FT confirmed in a report published yesterday afternoon that there is an outstanding £43 billion for mass testing. It's a phenomenal sum. They want a British diagnostics industry. So that means they will start buying British when they can. It's basically like setting up a whole new public service. Nearly half the annual budget for the NHS. I was surprised in the light of vaccine news that this is still such a massive commitment. But Han****'s recent TV interviews make it clear that that remains the intention. Contracts are set up for 2 years.

Hello everyone! Looking forward to the announcement later this morning. 6 lateral flow tests to be unveiled. I am hopeful that 1 or more will be our partners, Abingdon, Mologic or even Avacta. Whether or not they do the contract for £912 million will be agreed in the next couple of weeks and the FT says another £42 billion worth of contracts for new tests are to follow. ODX can manufacture 125 million tests a year. Good to hear clear confirmation of the role of mass testing from Sir John Bell who was also interviewed last night on Newsnight. As usual the Telegraph are getting the story first. GLA.

Snowking, I think they will arrive at the right conclusion in the end. I think they are overcautious. Which is strange because they throw caution to the bloody wind when it comes to buying loads of crap tests! Getting on my wick now. But you know. ..We have to practice a bit of patience and all that. Today is a good day in my book (US election is taking Trump out of our lives forever after all).
Planning is underway for massive orders for home tests and we have 3. And MB has found some sort of collaboration between Pfizer (one of the world's biggest pharma's) and Mologic.
MB, did you bottom out what their interest is in the validation of Mologic's tests? Do you think it's about a verification process for the efficacy of a future vaccine roll out?

Great find LeFlic17 and inspired find Merchant Banker. So now we know:
1. About 50 million tests intended for home delivery over the next year- in the light of this single contract
2. Mologic's tests are being verified by Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (corroborated also by the Liverpool Echo and by LSTM) with collaboration from Pfizer.

Just stating the obvious Regulator. It's a new virus. I have already said that. The Chief Scientist of the World Health Organisation probably has the edge on you for assessing the medical risk and probabilities about immunity. The point she makes is each study shows a longer and longer period of immunity in line with the length of the disease. This is the 6th or 7th study that also qualifies how the immune system works holistically to fight the virus and the perceived 'waning' of antibodies is actually just that they are less visible unless there is a risk of exposure, when antibodies are re-activated. I think the US will act on this before we do. They seem to be better at building on the evidence base than we are.

I disagree Regulator. 7 international large scale research exercises have shown we have immunity to this disease if we recover, the same as any other SARS 2 disease. They've even established high levels of cross immunity from people who have recovered from Ebola. We can't say empirically that we have immunity for years until we have had the disease for years. But it amazes me that we are so hesitant when the Chief Scientist for the WHO says we probably have immunity for years and we have clearly established it for the duration of the disease so far for those who have recovered. But in the meantime we are spending tens of millions on crap tests that we already know don't work.

SAGE warned on how poor this test was ages ago. That was a very sophisticated poo joke this morning Regulator. Made me lol.
Don't get why ministers are making any decisions about which tests we use. Ain't that why we have the MHRA, PHE and CONDOR? Though the Sunday Times said CONDOR worked like snails going backwards according to their sources. Hey ho. We plod determinedly forward.
