Gambling/investing7 Jan 2022 13:11
I think there is a distinction to be drawn between outright gambling, where one is pretty much trusting to luck for a successful outcome, and investing, where a thorough analysis of the pros and cons is undertaken in advance. If there was no difference everyone with a SIPP would be classed as a gambler. As for being long or short, the difference is (usually) that those who are long can sit back and ride the peaks and troughs over a number of months/years whereas those who are short need the SP to go down within a limited, usually fairly narrow, timescale. Yes, you can stay short as long as you like if you want to keep paying he fees for doing so but most don't do this. Luck is involved whichever you choose to do but one can limit the role this plays by good research and staying patient.
