American market are up today with some better than expected news the heard can move quickly once opportunities open up in other markets.

Rolls Royce have other problems to sort before considering dividends and buybacks, if you want those look around as there are many already in doing these at decent prices and others far closer to returning those well before Rolls Royce. If you can sit here that’s fine and wait BUT you’ll miss those that are reach here know so making returns quicker

Just to play devils advocate, Rolls Royce aren’t paying dividends or doing buybacks anytime soon and not at all likely in 2023. Not only do they have debts levels but pre-covid levels of air travel remain elusive through most of 2023. Just adding some reality to the situation. It’s a slow burner than other if you look around.

With all due respect, if Chinese opening up rebound was expected any time soon do you think the oil price would be sitting below 80$. Or are the markets unsure and nervous what is actually going on there. How does opec+ set its production output at its next meeting to meet Chinese opening up demand OR to maintain oil price target with cuts if the Chinese situation goes down hill. Really difficult decision to make given the Chinese are frugal and untrustworthy with any information they release. Priority is always to maintain oil price as that where the big bucks are invested in any market.

I look for dividend paying shares or ones i feel likely to reinstate soon. I’m not seeing Rolls Royce adding those or buy backs in 2023. I’m happy to trade it at the moment but how you invest may well differ from myself. The short positions against the FTSE100 do seem to have increased quite a lot over the past week so any catalyst might tip it. I don’t think the oil price is reflecting a Chinese opening up from lockdowns as yet so the markets seem a wee bit cautious.

I would concur that thought. FTSE100 is trading at or near an all time high and above its pre covid peak. Given the state of the UK economy and financial position it’s a bazaar situation given we’re heading into a recession and further interest rate rises to come. Personally I only hold dividend pay shares myself and those that will be reinstating them in the very near future. Rolls Royce won’t be reinstating their dividend any time soon so I don’t want to hold it.

Ftse100 and Dax starting to look top heavy given current issues. Keep watching the shorters gathering on both charts, when the heard moves the money will follow and rally will end. Sold mine today from pull back at 103.85p, if it goes higher or lower I’ll sit and wait for next trade. Very noisy here today so will see you on my next time.

Some of shares in commodities will also be taking opportunities to bang in their share buy backs whilst they’re dipping back a bit so good for long term holders of those shares to add value longer term. Market not currently pricing in a successful Chinese opening up and its affects on oil and gas supplies. Confidence doesn’t seem to be there just yet

I tend to keep an eye on the ftse100, Dax short & long position as gives a good indication of when the current rally becomes over bought as buyers start the switch to sellers. Lots of other indications of when to evaluate my position to inevitable peaks and troughs from yesterdays falls and rise

UK government don’t need to take chances so could follow the more cautious approach the more sensible countries are taking with a wait and see policy for the time being. UK government are desperate for any chance of good news to help the economy so I guess they’re happy to take the chance what ever the outcome. Desperate times call for desperate measures I supposed when a government is at a low ebb in its tenure in power.

Spain just announced same covid restrictions in past hour on Chinese travellers as italy and America and so on. UK government better hope they call this one correct as they’re not popular so no room to call this one wrong.

Holding up Chinese opening up will help keep commodity prices down so central banks aren’t forced to go harder or for longer on inflation with interest rate rises so maybe there’s a method in their madness…

EU are meeting today to discuss joint measures on Chinese arrivals. EU Health Security Committee calling for joint measures as China reopens borders. Italy pushing for similar measure to their own.

Volumes remain relatively low so movements can get exaggerated in either direction. No Santa rally coming this year that’s for sure.
