You raised some good points, but maybe just bought at too high a price. some years ago I bought these for less than £20 and sold out at £28 and thought i did well but has gone up ever since. Everyone has their own strategy but i never take a loss on a ftse 100 share cos you always have a high % of getting your capital back unlike AIM or small cap shares. Tobacco is still one of the shares i want to be in, not spectacular but reliable dividends. GLA.

Hi no i sold my last lot of ABG last june at about 400p to breakeven. Shame i missed on the good run due to the china gold takeover speculation but once i sold out i didn't regret it too much. Days like today make me thankfull im no longer in this. Good luck to all holders cos if the 4th quarter figures dissapoint and with this share most do, then i really think it could revisit the £3 mark.

Nice to see some chat on here. Japan tobacco has been talked about for a while as a buyer for IMT but maybe just daily mail talk. Never lost money on tobacco shares, better than gold.

Coming on my radar again with these falls despite no news or trading updates. Pocketed the final divi and sold out at 452 which appears to have been good timing for once!

Maybe it's time the government stopped fleecing smokers with the very high taxes and bring back tobacco advertising, not much chance of that either.

My largest holding is in Imperial Tobacco and has had a bad week as well. You have to think long term as where was the price of this one year ago? The Tobacco lobby is very powerful and this company has many irons in the fire so the plain packaging could face all sorts of legal challenges in different countries if it takes off. Whilst it is bad for the brands I think it is unlikely to make people stop smoking as they don't care about the boxes, even with the big graphic health warnings we see today. I went in WH Smiths recently and all the cigarettes were hidden behind a curtain anyway! how pathetic.

This offer is not a straight forward affair as it involves the exchange rate of the ASD/GBP and the value of St Babs Shares. 150p was available when the news broke but since then it has slipped quite a bit. I'm a bit annoyed i sold out of allied at 121p as i could of had 150p but my buys were at eqv 252 and 176p (some on Aim before consolidation at 42p) so i was always going to lose out. Unless you bought in the last few months not many will have made much from this.

I hear what you are saying. It is difficult to make much on this when it is in such a strong downtrend you need to get the timing just right or before you know it you can be 10-15% down in days then its a recovery job. 338 is a very good entry but i certainly wouldnt be buying now at around 400 if i did it would be 350 within days. The big rises are nice but realistically the big falls have outnumbered the rises. When this floated it was over £6 and the gold price was much lower than today.
