I expect BP to do what is in the financial interests of the company as far as Rosneft is concerned. I do not expect it to give in to pressure from political nobodies whose trade is gesture. Next thing they’ll be telling us not to listen to
Tchaikovsky. BP will still be here when Putin, Biden and the rest of them are long gone.

My other major holding is BP. I can understand BP taking a hammering today as it has a 20% stake in a Russian company and could be affected by sanctions. But of the two holdings, it is AV that has suffered worse. There seems to be no reason for this, other than general panic.
I’ll be topping up tomorrow unless some drastic news suggests a further fall. Next week’s results day is surely going to push AV higher.

Point taken. I too am optimistic long term but worried that long term could be too long for me. I think some of the consequences of invasion must already have been priced in for BP. Today, my worst losses have been in Aviva and other insurers.

I understand people’s anger at the international situation but it would be good if people resisted the temptation to sound off about Putin and addressed specifically BP related topics such as the likely effects of sanctions, production, supply, oil price etc.

Away from the really serious news, I note that the National Portrait Gallery and Scottish Ballet don’t want our money anymore. This is the usual simplistic virtue-signalling that we should expect from these publicly-subsidised, free (vegan) lunch snowflake types. They’ll now just get more funding from public sources or from some truly “ethical” company that is NOT investing in the world’s future by spending billions of its shareholders’ money on green projects.

I too am not convinced that the Ukraine is the only factor behind the current dip in SP. The pattern over the past few quarters has been a lift preceding results day in anticipation of fantastic results and perhaps a divi increase. Then we get the fantastic results and NO divi increase. The SP slides then we get the usual divi drop followed by slow recovery.
The drop last Monday was obviously Russia related but I’m not so sure about the rest of it.

I am definitely with you on the need to increase divi. Less than 4% is pretty bad. Meanwhile.... my cousin (listening to last week’s hype on the BBC) tells me I must be raking it in with my BP shares. She was surprised to learn that I (like all the rest of pre-pandemic holders) am still down about 20% in capital and down 48% in income. Your PR campaign is much needed.

I see the logic your suggestion of a divi related to oil price but I’d be worried that we’d court the wrong kind of publicity; it wouldn’t just be the Left who’d be baying for a windfall tax if we got more in our pockets every time the pump price went up.

I know there has been a lot of discussion about divi on this board in the past few months but a couple of things have now made the issue more acute.
First, with SP passing £4, the yield drops below 4%.
Second, CPI has hit 5.5%. If you’ve got money in NSI then that is what you’ll get from them.
The fact is BP is no longer an income share. There are other good reasons to hope for capital growth but that attracts a different type of investor. Surely the low level of divi is going to hold back the SP, at least a bit.
Does anybody think the BoD will take inflation into account to give us a bit more?

Jssr has been reported. Interesting to see if the monitor actually takes any action. Posts like his are just offensive and can do real damage to the person being bullied. He is this board at its worst. As you say, we can all just filter him.

Can anyone predict how long sanctions would be likely to last? If an invasion happens, I could see the West having to make a token stance against Russia but then back-tracking on anything very severe a few months down the line. Does anybody else think this a likely scenario?

I agree. I am sick of the posturing of western governments. Russia has a legitimate interest in not having NATO on its doorstep. They’ve already had to accept the situation with the Baltic states. In the Nineteenth Century, Belgian neutrality was seen as a good thing as a partial buffer between France and Germany. That’s a good parallel.
If there are no plans to admit Ukraine to NATO then why not give an assurance to that effect in return for a guarantee of non-intervention in its internal affairs?

I’m not disagreeing with anything you’re saying about Boris’s cronies but I always feel obliged to challenge anyone who rubbishes those of us who studied Latin and Greek at one of the good universities. Classics, philosophy and theology all teach precision of thought and give the student an appreciation that our modern world with its preoccupations, attitudes, assumptions and mores is just one part of a much longer, wider and more complex story. That has got to be a good thing.
(Not that I have anything against science graduates or modern universities.)

I completely agree with Avid on this one. Don’t panic if there is a drop following the results announcement. I sold about 15% of my holding on the last drop and regret it as we are now up another 40p in two weeks.

Any comments on the tiny SP increase for Shell following their great (albeit expected) results? Was it all priced in? Is it the meagre divi increase? Genuine questions.

Sorry Cherry for being a bit short-tempered there. Funnily enough, I’ve just had to do a bit of scouting around to find the results day for Aviva (2nd March). Their investors’ site doesn’t give it unlike the BP one.
