I am happy to see things calm down, relatively speaking, over the last 10 days or so. Of note IMHO is that the SP did not succumb to the general AI related volatility in the run up to Nvidia's results announcement. To me, that is a clear sign that the larger investors in ALRT are happy to hold, suggesting that there is a real expectation of a significant return on their investment. It is, again IMHO, only a matter of when and not if.

There remain concerns that the, indisputable, AI bubble will burst. There was never any doubt that Nvidia would report strong results but what folks were looking for was some indication/insight of when the bubble will burst. There was none.

Personally, I see OpenAI as the catalyst for the bubble to burst. It is losing billions, investing billions that it does not have and is currently relying on a bewildering, opaque, series of multi billion $ circular deals with the likes of META . "Hey pal, you place a multi billion $ order with me and I will place one with my m8 Fred, and he will place a martha farker of a deal with you".

If Nvidia can beat expectations and maybe offer improved margins that it could calm some nerves. Deeply correlated stocks such as Palantir, TSMC, Super Micro, CoreWeave, Nebius, plus the entire industrial-AI complex are on the hook. Look to Meta as the bellwether after having crossed below its 200-day simple moving average and kept cratering.

Earnings are seen as coming in up 54 per cent to $1.25 per share with revenues 56 per cent higher year-on-year to $54.8bn. Analysts are sounding upbeat ahead of the report with guidance expected to be strong on continued ramp of the GB300 advanced AI servers and generally insatiable AI demand as hyperscalers continue to bolster capex. The bar is set very high but the stock is now in correction territory having slid over 10 per cent in November.

Nvidia fell another 2 per cent ahead of its earnings on Wednesday, a key moment for sentiment in the market regards the AI trade. If that fails, traders will be looking at the September payrolls report on Thursday for Federal Reserve rate cut news to boost sentiment. We could even see a more dovish Fed suddenly if AI trade blows up, labour market cools and inflation remains onside...favour small caps in this environment.

It looks like we have a broad liquidation event on our hands – stocks selling off in lockstep, AI basket in correction territory (shares are down 10 per cent), European and Asian markets falling as economic worries and macro headwinds develop, crypto markets are also in freefall and gold – the ultimate haven – tested the 50 per cent retracement at the $4,000 round number again, although it is finding some support at this level. It’s all happening this week, just as Nvidia earnings create a bit of a cliff edge for sentiment towards AI.

It is the insane valuations of tech companies that is causing the jitters together with the mind boggling capex, especially by OpenAI, a company that is losing money by the billions of $ and yet is committing to enormous expenditure with Nvidia, Google, Microsoft et al. Where is it going to get the wonga and if it does, how is it going to pay it back? To me, it seems like one massive game of IOU pass the parcel. And when the music stops, which poor sod is going to be left holding the IOU parcel. Whoever does is going to go bust in quick time.
