Here are a few other mixed nuggets. Seeing Machines’ important tier-1 partner Veoneer did not strengthen its DMS position in Q3, still being on the bid list for 11 potential customers and qualified for 8 customers. Honda is Veoneer’s most important customer, but we are uncertain whether Veoneer is in Honda’s DMS tender. However, there is of course a risk that Seeing Machines could win Honda with another tier-1.

Volkswagen recently stated a desire to develop all software and hardware in-house. We assume this statement possibly could be behind the RFQ delay. Now that this is out of the way, the RFQ could be settled imminently. If insourcing becomes a strong trend among other OEMs as well it could in theory be bad for Smart Eye. However, a strategy of sourcing all software and hardware in-house would not be feasible, in our view. The USD 9 bn investment is nothing in this context and will not get Volkswagen far. Just think about how much Smart Eye and Seeing Machines have invested in a rather small (albeit crucial) component of the driver monitoring system. In a shorter perspective we see a positive effect from Volkswagen’s statement. The more uncertainty and the more often car OEMs change their mind regarding the architecture, the better for Smart Eye.

Smart Eye recently announced an interesting partnership with ST, Europe’s third largest semiconductor company, second only to NXP and Infineon. The relation is old, i.e. the partnership in itself is not exactly new. Also, it is not something unique as Smart Eye is not alone working with ST.

Moreover, we note that Smart Eye wrote in the report that it “manages to deliver software according to the very highest specifications”. The Swedish version of the report was even more clear, stating it can do that today and tomorrow.

Knowing what a pilot or trainee pilot is looking at could be just as important as assessing the outcomes of their actions. This year L3 will be installing the first permanent eye-tracking system into a civil full flight simulator. The technology will help to standardize head-up display flight training which will provide real-time monitoring and post-scenario debrief.

The implementation of eye tracking technology is a substantial development within the world of pilot training and will provide critical data to better measure, tailor and advance training programs. Going forward it is clear to see the opportunities for this type of technology across a much wider area of pilot training.

Or we have signed the contract and an NDA which expires near the end of October, so you can announce it when we want you to announce it. That gives you a few weeks to plan.

Or maybe the NDA expiry date was set a few months ago so we can plan the CMD pending an unsigned contract, contract isn't signed yet as we need to buy shares and announce results etc. Now the contract is signed and we can announce in time for CMD and our client gets to choose the date to match their needs - hopefully Berlin.

I don't think this RMS is for us. Yes, it potentially over a thousand trucks, but at 120, not worth the fuss other than to fill a news gap.

Perhaps itr is a small step to start the price upwards. Hopefully, this entrée will be followed, by a series of meaty RMSs that will each build on the momentum of the last to move the price, for the last time to move us well past 5p.

But the last reason, and this is why it is promoted more than 200 on other contracts is who it is and where it is. Up here Toll or Ron Finemore have no recognition but from what I have read, those names would turn heads and have serious kudos to those in the field down under. Same with Alaska, it may not mean much other than a pretty tail, but it catches the headlines and they are to the ones to follow in their area. So for the same reason, if it is good enough for Bison, then it must be good enough for me is the message in Canada and in many of the US states where they operate.

We all sat up and paid attention when National Express signed up. But It showed their competitors and those who they work in the same field and every other person in the UK that when we say we worked with them, we are serious and can be trusted by brands that they know and hopefully respect.

It is good that not all of our customers feel the need to hide us under an NDA.

I think that some R&D reduction is due to the recent $35m of grants from Aus government for research. Some of that may be paying the salary of the top researchers

Only problem is that Veoneer don't have any profits yet, so would need the OEMs to cough up

This is the first time that I have seen this mystery Aussie company named. Since the December 2018 RNS we have been wondering who:

partnered with L3 Commercial Aviation, a leading provider of airline pilot training solutions, to deliver integrated eye tracking capabilities into their Full Flight Simulator (FFS). The first device with this functionality will be delivered to a major Australian airline in 2019.

I'm not going to spoil the surprise though, they will have to read it for themselves. Good article too.

Thanks Klick - also notice the picture on the RHS of page 7 shows an implementation of Seeing Machines camera and LEDs. This is what they use in their test cars, but the shape/layout is what we should be looking for in other vehicles

Does this grant explain why the R&D costs will fall in the second half of the FY as mentioned by PM recently. I guess that some staff will be seconded to the new centre, or AR least a proportion of their costs

Fleet numbers are difficult. When you have 100 it is easy to double. When you have 16000 the growth can seem slow as it is "only" 16k and the opportunity is millions. When we had the live interface we could measure daily, weekly progress of installs and we could see the lumpiness and even reversals that are understandable with a bit of thought. Now we are lucky to get quarterly figures and estimates for YE.

We can never get a handle on new wins that may or may not get an RMS. Were they included in the forecast or new win? But can we ever expect more in a commercial environment.

When we have 100k+ installed the volume may be enough to smooth the numbers to have a live value posted maybe even publicly in the website this time

I think the latter is the least likely. They would always undercook it. So that it can get warmed up again if business was slow.

I am sure that in Elon's head were just 5 minutes away from his Full Self Driving nirvana, he doesn't think that Tesla should be slowed down by legacy regulations. Never mind a new fangled DMS. He hopes to save more lives with safer driving but I cant see that happening anytime soon

The world is starting to wake up and see his dream is getting further away. Unfortunately, those who aren't listening are sleeping in his cars. He needs Tesla to be the premium car with none of the old rules holding back his innovation, but his short cuts are starting to unravel. We are lucky that so far the fatalities have been few. Perhaps his judgement was "cost effective" and justifiable but these cars will be on the road for a long time so there are unfortunately more fatalities to come and they won't just be rich Tesla drivers sleeping or watching DVDs, no it will be innocent pedestrians and other car drivers. 2024 in Europe cant come quick enough and I hope that the US and other countries follow soon after with making DMS mandatory. level 4 is likely to be closer to 2030, not the 2019 that so many companies have been telling their VC funders. DMS is going to have a long life even after Level 4 is commonplace

So Capital Markets Day is Wednesday, November 6th. SEE will need some news in advance.

Volvo launching their all electric XC40 on October 16th. They will have a detailed plan of teasers to maximise the news value before and on launch day. As Maps says, they don’t want any news about 2021 models with new safety features to distract from the XC40 launch. We “know” that Veoneer are likely to be delivering our DMS for Volvo. But they are in their silent period - Sept 27, 2019 through Oct 24, 2019.
