I beg to differ.
Dividends are not a giveaway, they are a return on shareholders' investment from the profit made by the company, which, without the shareholders, wouldn't exist.
Buybacks are an attempt by the BOD to raise the value of the SP and the EPS, the shareholder gets nothing from this unless the SP increases significantly. If Looney thinks that this is good craik then he is deluded. And the current woeful SP performance bears this out.
Ii is my view that the effects of Looney's strategy are being masked somewhat by other factors - COP, the rise of inflation and the general bad publicity that the green mafia are attempting to destroy the civilised world with, along with complicity from short termist politicians who only have the next vote in mind. When they go, they leave behind the wreakage for somone else to sort out, as do CEOs who fail their employers - us, the shareholders.
I am not in this for anything else but money, as I suspect every shareholder is. It is not my concern if a sad scandinavian schoolgirl of questionable intelligence is upset because she has read that the sun is going out. If she - and all the lickspittle politicians that appear to be in thrall to her, quite frankly, idiotic ranting - want to run the world on sunlight and the breeze from butterfly wings, then they can start up their own planet and leave mine just as it, thanks all the same.
The SP is not going anywhere until the dividend is returned to something like it was before Looney got the idea that he was an economic genius, rather than the drilling engineer he actually is.
