The one line comment will not help the sp imv and the news from IG is slightly better today so on balnce I am expecting minimal movement here today, maybe a couple of pence on IGG - because their eps growth looks good.

Consumer confidence falls yet again to new all time low;

According to BRC-Opinium data, consumer expectations over the next three months of their personal financial situation dropped to minus 4 in January, down from minus 3 in December.

Consumer's expectations of the state of the economy worsened to minus 34 in January, down from minus 27 in December and personal spending on retail fell to minus 9 in January, down from minus 3 in December.

Personal spending expectations overall dropped to plus 4 in January, down from plus 11 in December but personal saving improved to minus 3 in January, up from minus 5 in December.

Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: "As the government warns of tough times ahead, it is little surprise that the public have caught the January blues. Consumer confidence in the economy fell to a new low, with concerns most pronounced among older generations.

About 18 months ago when the Tories first published their 'net zero' paper , I could see that there were errors in the assumptions and forecasts based on my professionalm work previously for both national grid and in the oil and gas sector. Knowing that the professor was an independent expert I emailed him with some views and we exchanged a few emails in which we generally agreed . He is very open to the ideas and opinions of others and if you have any particular sector knowledge that might help him , he will likely be grateful.

Finally he did suggest that I purchased and read his book on 'net zero' that was about to be published ! So maybe he was thinking of that!

I watch IG TV daily on youtube - 730 -1030 am and one of the presenters seems confident that gold will hit usd3000 this year and at that level the maths look even stronger .

B- B , you are spot on that there was never any austerity under osborn - at best he balanced the books. What we suffered from then was the cost of the 2008 bank bail out and now we are suffering from the covid bailout and net zero madness that is destroying our economy by making us uncompetitive in every sector unless or until our wages drop in real terms to balance out those effects. A combination of bad luck and bad governments has got us here and frankly Labour are making things worse.

Denby, stable or not he is now leading the free world on a different path to that plotted out before. Investors need to decide how this will play out and where to place their capital. Many have already pushed more into US stocks and there is a sense of optimism amidst the uncertainity- hwoever the billionaires that surround him should keep things sweet. We shall see.

Well we would need 7X the nuclear power in the UK if we were to replace gas fired generation today. Why dead in the head , Ed has nailed our colours to the wind mast is beyond me. Hopefully these last few days of still weather are making the government see that the mini reactor investments are now urgent.

For me the downside risk is that a desperate chancellor introduces a bank levy because other revenue streams ; e.g Stamp duty on house purchases falls away but the upside is that interest rate margins stay high and a surging US economy provides decent income there. Finely balanced but if I sold I would probably reinvest in the likes of; CSN, LGEN , Plus, IGG or JD Sports. All of which have a sound investment case imv.DYOR.

The 2 counties i have looked at -Oxfordshire and Norfolk showed last year's volumes [ combined new and existing] of sales were at their lowest in over 30 years and that included the 2008 crash. Labour will be lucky if half their figure is met - like their net zero ideas - student union politics.

The first good thing that the chancellor has done or maybe will do! Typically it involves interfering , positively in this instance, in a legal process - but I am not complaining!
