RE: Unsustainable Public Sector Pensions24 May 2025 11:05
My political views are far right, apparently, but all workers , from private and public sectors deserve final salary pension s linked to inflation imv. The fact that we can't afford them just now is because of financial mismanagement, for example , if we paid less out in benefits to the non workers ,we could pay pensioners more. I heard a debt charity manager say that 25% of the cases his staff deal with are people who get more in benefits than his average employee. Lots on £50k plus benefits.
One trick the government pulled about 15 years ago , was to massage the inflation data so that pension bills [ and benefits] fell in real terms and that was to use CPI as the index in place of RPI. This months figures show CPI at 3.5% [ shock horror] but RPI at 6.4% , which includes housing costs , as essential imv.So were this the month used for benefit increases , those people would have a cut of 3% in real terms.
We are bankrupt of ideas and money, and no politician, not even Reform are offering to reinstate real inflation measures.
