Really interesting read, shows how brands can really target their market audience. Use of geo marketing to players who had a subway near them is particularly clever. Also the difference between exposure for 40 seconds or just 1 second will surely be of interest to others. Hopefully Subway will expand this approach globally.

As a gamer myself this is the real interesting part for me and I believe that ads can be introduced cleverly to a number of different gaming genres. As Calamari says GTA is basically trying to replicate a real-world setting so it would be extremely easy in this case to introduce ads into one of the world's biggest gaming franchises and again improve the realism of the environment for gamers rather than detracting from the experience.

Obviously for sports games the advertising element is easy because pitchside advertising actually exists in a real world context so replicate this space within a game and you only add to making it a more real immersive experience.

As you say the difficulty is bringing this to other genres of gaming. This I believe is where the brands can get creative to produce adverts that specifically relate to where they are appearing.

One thought I had on seeing the introduction of an outdoor cinema in the new fortnite map was that maybe there would be events like the live music event with Marshmello where an actual film could be shown there including adverts prior to the film. Audience of 10.7 million watched the DJ Marshmello event so major revenue to be made if the above happens.

Whilst I thought that the launch would be a good time to integrate the ads if the testing etc is still ongoing then I agree that it's much better to get it right before implementing. Plenty of space in the game for ads to be put in later down the line and remember Fortnite is a game that has an update every 3 months so nice and easy to put in if they do go down that road.

I think we're all invested here because we see the potential and get excited by the possibilities so of course there is going to be speculation.

Good news is that whilst we were all concentrating on Fortnite yesterday, Football Manager 2020 release date was announced for the 19th November :D

Definitely having the desired effect at the moment though as it's making headlines in all the mainstream media!

Still unknown as far as I'm aware. Most likely date is tomorrow as Tuesdays are when Fortnite usually introduce updates.

However, very bold move to keep it down for longer than 24 hours as I imagine gamers who have spent lots of money on the game will be very angry if they can't play it! Fine line between marketing genius and annoying your customers.

So many exciting potential avenues for in-game advertising.

One that really springs to mind would be to get in on Cyberpunk 2077 which for non-gamers is one of the most anticipated upcoming game realises due to come out in April 2020. Set in a future dystopian setting it looks like a perfect opportunity for brands to come up with some really inventive marketing that would slot into the world perfectly and only serve to increase the realism of the game. Take a look at a trailer and imagine some of the advertising opportunities in that big open world. Incredibly exciting and something I'm hoping BIDS are looking at.

Anybody else seen games where they've been thinking it would be perfect for native in-game ads?

And with a whole new map they could quite easily create an urban area resembling times square.

With a blank canvas I'm sure there are a huge number of ways to creatively bring in some billboards or other ways of advertising without destroying the feel and immersive nature of the game.

For all the non-gamers out there invested in BIDS thought you might be interested to know that last night the in game fortnite world was destroyed and sucked into a black hole. Now if gamers try to log onto fortnite they just see a black hole with occasional seemingly random numbers appearing out of it. All of the fortnite social media feeds are also showing as plain black backgrounds.

It seems as though the launch of fortnite 2 is imminent. Purely speculation of course but what a perfect time to introduce native in-game ads into the game don't you think??

Lots of margin calls being shaken out at 11am. Bargain prices now if you have money free to take advantage.

Tough market at the moment

Good post Intrepid. I really value posts like yours that take a much more balanced view of things. Reading and being part of these forums can inevitably lead to a bit of herd mentality where everything is just about how fantastic things are and when we are all going to make loads of money.

Refreshing to get a reminder every now and then that this is all about risk vs reward and no matter how great the prospects of a company are there are always going to be risks and anyone who thinks there aren't in this or any other company is kidding themselves.

For me I see BIDS as a real opportunity but certainly not without risks being things like competition, external market (even though we are supposedly sheltered from Brexit if the whole market tanks then we are not immune!) . Nothing is a sure thing otherwise we'd all be millionaires.

Yep, good news here, bigger broker for bigger and better things in the future.

People always seem to panic over the mention of the word broker. I think a lot of people instantly think new broker = discount placing which is ludicrous especially in this case. No need to panic, quite the opposite, this shows where we are heading.
