I agree Kipper, I think director buys are poorly correlated to predicting bottoms in cycles, but I also believe it's a signal to us PI's that at the time of purchasing (presuming a decent sized purchase) that there are no plans for a dilution.
For the shorts, 1.8% sold short is not that large and for the moment, those companies shorting CPI are losing money. But, there must be a rationale and shorts seem to be slowly increasing. The rationales behind shorting by professionals often turn out to be quite complex so I struggle to interpret the importance of the shorts. What I can say is that they don't always make money on the short side. They are taking risks too, although professionals might have better hedging policies in place than a lot of PI's.
