While we currently have insufficient information to in my opinion gauge how successful this new division will be there are some signs to be hopeful. So far concentration has been on frieght services that KMS had provided. However, there are the non freight services that KMS provides that may prove more profitable.

As an example the Valonia is classed as a port tender. But as can be seen by this link https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/details/235076222 it is currently on Offshore Ops. This would seem to indicate that it is at sea. The position given is North East Atlantic Ocean my geography is worse than my maths so can someone help out where would that be.

With the help of the HARL bid team it may be able to bid for the Jersey and Channel Islands ferries contract which will come up for tender later in the year. So I am hopeful. I am expecting to see an RNS later today as we had previously been promised further details.

Since arriving at Harland & Wolff in mid-2023, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with clients, partners and colleagues about our 5 market, 6 services growth strategy.

On my latest trip to #Belfast this week, I’ve been struck by seeing this strategy come to life. The entire site is alive with action across our sectors; from repair and new build activities in #Commercial, refit in #Cruise & #Ferry, groundworks for our new fabrication hall to facilitate our work in #Defence, and preparations for the imminent arrival of a floating production vessel in #Energy.

If these first few days of January are anything to go by, #2024 is set to be an exciting year for the organisation and we look forward to delivering for our clients, strategic partners, supply chain and the communities we serve.

Mamissimo ref 15.10 post So if the steamship company confirms that they have signed the contract with Pirou then the Levelling Up funding is lost. That would mean that HARL would only have the fast ferry service. Not sure how viable that will be.

ONE YEAR INTO FSS

Today we celebrate one year since #TeamResolute was awarded #FSS contract by UK Ministry of Defence to build three Fleet Solid Ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

It has been a thrilling 12 months, with the team working hard to make continual progress on design and build of an outstanding capability to support the Royal Navy at sea.

This dedication has seen us make significant progress in the design and engineering of the vessels by UK-based BMT as well as in the procurement of equipment.

Harland & Wolff shipyards in Belfast and Appledore in Devon have boosted recruitment, built new facilities and are creating extra space to house the building. Transfer of knowledge and reskilling is underway thanks to colleagues in Navantia, S.A., S.M.E and through programme management by Navantia UK.

All the work is being undertaken in close collaboration with Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) to guarantee the best outcome.

Key figures from the last year:

- More than 120 engineers dedicated to design and engineering at BMT’s various locations;

- £77million recapitalisation and modernisation works underway in Belfast;

- 26 Northern Ireland-based companies involved in the programme;

- More than 150 local business and SMEs engaged in ‘Meet the buyer’ events;

- 37 on-the-job training courses prepared;

- More than 260 new jobs in Appledore and Belfast shipyards;

- Around 40 apprentices and graduates involved in the programme at the shipyards.

Team Resolute is dedicated to delivering a pivotal UK Defence capability with British-designed, highly adaptable FSS ships. Aiming for Carbon Zero status within their 30-year lifespan, the initiative also focuses on preserving and honouring our shipbuilding heritage and deep-rooted design legacies, enhancing our industrial capacity, and fostering our skills and prosperity across the UK and its communities.

This article provides information on proposals to change the rules on single source contracts. I am not sure what a QDC is so if anyone does do let me know. These rules only apply when a direct award is made to a contractor. As there has not been a competitive tender the amount of profit that can be made is restricted. For this reason FSS is not covered by these rules. I suspect that BAe and BAB who would have been consulted on the drafts have made sure that they will not lose out too much by these chnages.

The issues mentioned in the attached article are largely not HARL related but may be of interest epecially to those who have shares in Electricity Storage companies. Also it shows a possible solution to the question of funding gas storage projects. The last story is an interesting one as it is an engineering feat. Does anyone know of a longer intrconnector.

'Chilly beautiful site visit to the world famous Harland & Wolff, at one point the worlds largest shipyard. Great to see so much activity, variety and skills. Some exciting projects coming up! Cranes initially tested to 1,000 tons before commissioning. Awooga!'

Not sure what is meant by exciting projects coming up. We might find out soon.

Lottie123 ref 09.13 post I am sure that the MoD are looking to see if production can be bought forward. I think that Team Resolute may be able to complete the contract earlier. I recall JW saying in a submission to the Defence Select Committee that it should be possible to do a ship a year that would bring contract completion to around 2028.

I wonder if Team Resolute will get a bonus if they manage to complete early.

LSE03 ref 09.07 post I am going to query the reliability of this. I know some like to jump on anything positive but in this case I have issues. As far as I am aware HARL has not actually prodcued any wind jackets in over a year when the Saipem contract was cancelled. I am therefore unsure how HARL can be a market leader.

While browsing questions and answer I saw this question from John Healey:

'To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, when his Department plans to tender for two new submarine floating docks.

James Cartlidge:

An early market engagement notice was published on 7 November 2023 for Programme EUSTON. This engagement will inform the delivery strategy required to procure the planned out of water engineering maintenance facility at His Majesty's

Naval Base Clyde.

Following completion of the market engagement exercise this year, the Ministry of Defence intends to initiate a procurement programme for this additional capability. Programme EUSTON is currently in its concept phase and no date has yet been set for the tender process'

So good two or three years away. What will be done in the meantime to provide for this need?
