Controlling competition16 Sep 2018 08:51
I was wondering how easy would it be for sirius to control the competition in the Polyhalite market. Domestically the oly current competition is from the ICL plant at Boulby. However, due to the productio costs at Boulby I do not believe that it would be able to compete on costs so would be surprised if it remains financially viable five years after Poly4 goes into production. Internationally I am not sure if there are any other producers of Polyhalite as opposed to Potash. If there are not then Sirius is in my opinion to control the competition. The reason for this is because it curently holds all the Patents for granulating and pelletising the polyhalite for use. As a result any new producer will have to obtain a license from sirius to use its technology until the patent runs out. If they wait until the patents run out siriius would have the dominant position in the Polyhalite market.
