Gold is different depending on the geology. For the Welsh mines, the gold is 'lumpy' (technical term), so its unlikely the drill will intersect the lumps (like a needle in a haystack). They were drilling to check the geology was suitable for the nuggets, while separately they were sending off tons of bulk samples so they could check the overall grade, as bulk sampling will have enough 'lumps'. It was actually a surprise the drills intersected gold at all and suggests potential high grades from the sampling.
