BTW, in addition to my complicated history of rolls royce share ownership below I also reinvested all dividends . Believe it or not, back in 2003 the field was 9%. If HMRC can work.out my book cost I'd be really impressed.

Price has been all over the place since 1987 plus further complicated by having paper certificates in the beginning and electronic for the later shares

I moved them all to a new broker got them all recorded digitally and then transferred half to the missus. The book price got all mixed up during the moves and transfers .All sitting in an isa now. Think the latest book price is about a quid. But don't think that bears any resemblance to the true cost to me.

All I know I've got more worth tied up in these here shares than I would ever have dreamed possible back in 1987.

Maybe I've got my Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines mixed up. 🤓

Did a bit more digging, and things have moved on since the initial RR studies when I was a youngish engineer.

Can RR make this viable on civil shipping ?

If any company can RR can. The amount of 'engineering' excellence in all science disciplines within the submarine division is absolutely astounding.

As I said RR will no doubt giive it a good look at again with an eye to recent developments in design and ssfety methods and understanding of performance analysis. These are ruddy safe plant, UK has never had a nuclear accident.

It is true hat submarines do visit non nuclear ports. Ie ports yhst font have nuclear facilitues. I was never part of safety case for these occasions. I was mainly involved with the Operational and UK shutdown safety cases

I can't member how many subs we have ar the moment. But it sint that many. The infrastructure in place to support these is immense and very expensive.

It takes many years to train a crew to operate nuclear plant.

Also a submarine spends most of its opersting time nder the waves. So nuclear risk to society is effectively zero. A surface ship societal risk is much higher.

It's a great way of pumping research money into your industries and not get done for providing governmental support. US do it all the time for their aero industries usually under the heading of supersonic flight studies.

Yep. A very interesting concept and I'm sure RR will give it a revisit. Bit like the mobile reactors. That one did have a future, was worked up to a design, but mothballed after a couple of years design study.

Further to my note below. Another obstacle was whio would buy, operate and maintain the nuvlear powred ships. It's one h3ll of a commitment .

RR looked at nuclear powered commercial ships back in the 1990s. Among other things such as nuclear powered spaceships.. they aren't any new ideas really.

If I remember correctly one of the biggest obstacles was the reluctance for ports to accept nuclear powered ships docking. U S have nuclear powered aircraft carries, but that the Yanks for you.

They world may have moved on from then and there may be more if an acceptance of nuclear powered ships.
