if you look at the VC companies they've invested in, its to stay invested, maybe leverage debt to grow, they've stayed for a reasonable while; a third have then gone on to do an IPO. As this is already on the public markets, then if they are going to invest as a VC, then i cant see it is not with the OK of the board - just judging from their past investments where they have been active investors, taking positions on board etc. Maybe they went to board and said " we'll fund you and help you; this is big, you dont have to sell out, lets take it off the public market, grow it and then in 3 years re-enter the public markets."
Probably not quite this but something might have happened along those lines - in which event Polar would sell as they cant get the upside for Polar.
