Answer: To a large extent, yes. Investors don’t invest for the short term. It can take five to seven years to see returns. That’s why they seek political stability. Even though it’s said that elections will be held by June next year, people still feel uncertain. Announcing a date would provide some clarity, which is crucial for business and economic planning.

BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain today said many within the government privately acknowledge that if elections are held in December, the BNP would secure a two-thirds majority.

The BNP has pressed its case to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for national elections to be held by December, emphasising that the winter months offer the most conducive environment for polls and help prevent potential conspiracies by elements associated with the "fallen dictatorship", the party's Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said today (1 June).

Speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club, Mosharraf said the party had been invited by the chief adviser last month to explain their preference for a December election.

"December is winter, this is the election environment. The longer the elections are delayed, the more the allies of the fallen dictatorship will conspire at home and abroad. Some signs of conspiracy are being seen already," Mosharraf said.

BNP is also scheduled to meet with the chief adviser tomorrow (2 June) for another round of talks.

He added, "We have demanded that the election date be announced on any day in December that the government deems appropriate."

He also noted that their explanation regarding the difficulties of the January-June period did not receive a "good response" from the chief adviser's side.

BNP leader Hafizuddin slams Prof Yunus for ‘untrue’ remark on election timeline

BNP senior leader Hafizuddin Khan on Monday alleged that Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus disappointed their party by making an ‘untrue’ comment abroad that only one party wants the election to be held by December this year.

Speaking at a discussion, he urged the government to promptly hold the national election as the elected parliament will execute all reforms and expedite the trial of fascists.

The Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 44th death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.

“Prof Yunus is a virtuous son of the country and its pride. All political parties have supported him and will continue to support him in the future, but he has disappointed us,” the BNP leader said.

Hafiz, a BNP Standing Committee member, said they never imagined that a person like Prof Yunus would speak untruths.

“Even, he uttered it abroad. Going to Japan, he (CA) said that only one party, BNP, wants elections in December. Is this true?” he said.

The BNP leader claimed that 42 parties had earlier met the Chief Adviser, telling him they want the election to be held by December.

During a meeting in February, Hafiz recalled that the Chief Adviser clearly told a BNP delegation that elections would be held in December. “I was in that delegation.

Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus has invited BNP for talks again on June 2.

BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said this in a discussion in the capital on Saturday, reports BSS.

"The government is continuing the formalities of talks with political parties one after another, but there is no real progress," he said.

"Discussions are taking place, but nothing is being done. Real steps are needed to overcome the crisis of public trust, not just formalities," he added.

"It seems that if the Constitutional Reform Commission wants to change the constitution in its own way, the nation will have to agree on it," Salahuddin said, noting "If you forcefully impose anything, that is not democracy, it will be another Baksal."

"We believe in a democratic state, there will be differences of opinion. And there is no argument in favour of holding elections after December. The people of the country want elections under a neutral government immediately," the BNP leader said.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus left Tokyo on Saturday morning for home, wrapping up his four-day packed official tour to Japan.

NCP leader held over cargo truck 'extortion' in Dinajpur

The Army has detained a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) on allegations of extortion after he intercepted a cargo truck in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur, reports bdnews24.com.

He was apprehended in Rasulpur on the Phulbari-Mithapukur road on Thursday night, said Abdullah Al Mamun, chief of Parbatipur Model Police Station.

The Army filed a case against the NCP leader that night and handed him over to the police.

The arrestee, 40-year-old Tariqul Islam, is the son of late Mahmudul Sarkar from West Rajabasor village.

OC Mamun said, "The Sena Kalyan Sangstha (SKS) secured the tender to collect abandoned goods from the Barapukuria Coal Mine. On Thursday evening, those goods were loaded onto two trucks and were being taken from the coal mine. On the way, around 8:00 pm, a group of 30 to 35 people led by Tariqul blocked the two trucks."

"They tried to divert the two trucks to another route and demanded extortion money from the people in the trucks. When informed, members of the Barapukuria Coal Mine army camp immediately conducted a raid and arrested Tariqul."

SKS representative Ariful Islam filed a case on the same day over the incident, the police officer said.

Although there was no NCP committee in Parbatipur, Tariqul would sometimes introduce himself as the chief organiser of the Parbatipur upazila wing of NCP and sometimes as the convener, said OC Mamun

Second phase of Consensus Commission talks from tomorrow

The National Consensus Commission (NCC) formally announced that the second phase of political dialogue between the country's political parties and the commission will commence on Monday, June 2.

The inaugural session will be held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital's Segunbagicha area at 3:30 PM, with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus slated to open the proceedings. NCC's Public Relations Officer Paban Chowdhury said to the media that the Chief Adviser will formally inaugurate the second phase emphasizing the symbolic and procedural significance of the opening event. Chowdhury added that the commission is entering the new phase with a focus on 'thematic deliberations' particularly on issues where consensus remains elusive.

According to official sources within the commission, only the Chief Adviser will deliver remarks on the opening day to set the tone for the next round of discussions. Formal deliberations with political parties are scheduled to resume the following day, June 3, with one representative from each of the 32 invited political parties and alliances expected to participate.

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday claimed that at least 52 political parties across the country are demanding that the next national elections be held by December.

"Only those parties that were formed after August 5 are not demanding elections by December," he said, suggesting that the majority of the political spectrum is in favour of timely polls.

Yunus calls all-party meeting on Monday

Chief adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus will hold an all-party meeting on Monday.

The meeting, convened in his capacity as the chief of the National Consensus Commission, will be held at the Foreign Service Academy on Bayley Road in the capital.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam and the National Citizen Party on Saturday confirmed New Age that they received official invitations to participate in the meeting.

According to the party leaders, the second phase of discussions on reforms and election would formally be inaugurated on the day.

Left Democratic Alliance demands election by December

Bam Gonotantrik Jote (the Left Democratic Alliance) has called for holding the national elections within the upcoming December.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, the alliance said, “The claim that no one but one party wants elections in December is far from the truth. Bam Gonotantrik Jote considers such remarks to be misleading and purposeful.”

The statement noted that it is not just one party, but more than 50 political parties, both registered and unregistered, want the general elections to be held in December. The alliance demanded that the necessary electoral reforms be carried out soon, the election be held within December as per people’s aspiration, and the power be handed over to the elected government.

They alleged that the interim government has adopted the evil strategy of delaying the election, in order to implement the agenda of American imperialism and to politically favour a new party formed with state backing.
