Delay in election will create ground for return of autocrats: BNP

BNP Standing Committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain has said any dealy in election will create the ground for return of autocrats.

The current interim government and all involved with it will have to bear the responsibility if that happens, he added.

The BNP leader made the remarks while briefing journalists in front Jamuna after meeting the interim government’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, at his residence on Saturday evening.

“If the election is delayed under any pretext, we think the ground for return of the autocrats will be prepared. The responsibility for this will fall on the current government and those associated with it," said the BNP leader.

Army intensifies security across Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Army has detained more than 10,000 individuals across Bangladesh following its deployment, as part of an ongoing effort to assist law enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order.

A total of 2,188 individuals were detained in the last month alone during joint drives with other agencies, a senior army official familiar with the matter told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday morning.

Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus will hold separate meetings with leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami amid rising political tensions and various speculations.

The Chief Adviser will hold a meeting with the BNP delegation at 7:30PM on Saturday and another meeting with the Jamaat delegation at 8:30 PM at the State Guest House Jamuna, his official residence.

Amid growing political tensions and various speculations, a BNP delegation will hold a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Saturday.

The meeting is likely to take place at the Chief Adviser’s official residence Jamuna around 4:30pm, a BNP standing committee member told UNB on Friday night.

“We have been invited by the Chief Adviser’s office to hold a meeting over the latest political situation,” he said.

The BNP leader said they have also learnt that the Chief Adviser will hold a meeting with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami following their party’s meeting.

Wakar wants elections ‘by December

Bangladesh’s army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman has said the first elections since the country’s deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled to India on August 5 in 2024 in the face of a student-led mass uprising should be held by December, local media reported and military sources confirmed on Thursday.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman was reported to have told officers on Wednesday that elections should be held by December this year -- if not earlier, according to Bangladeshi newspapers.

Army chief at Officers’ Address

National election should be held by December

Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has said the next national election should be held by December. He noted that his stance on elections remains unchanged, and it is the right of an elected government to determine the country’s future course.

The army chief made the statement during an Officers’ Address programme in the Dhaka cantonment on Wednesday. Officers of different ranks stationed in Dhaka attended the programme in person, while many joined virtually.

In address to officers, B’desh Army Chief draws red lines for Yunus regime

Bangladesh's Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Wednesday addressed all officers at the Army Head Quarters (AHQ) in Dhaka, during which he reportedly stated that there will be no Humanitarian Corridor, nor any port allotted to any foreigners till an elected government comes to power in the country. Sources revealed that the address was followed by an intense interactive session, which also included online participation. Zaman underscored that Bangladesh Army will not allow anything that will affect the sovereignty and geographical stability of the country. His statement was reportedly greeted with a huge applause by the officers.

The COAS expressed serious concerns that the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government was taking decisions while keeping the country's Armed Forces in the dark. Speaking about elections, he said that an elected government should be in power by January 1, 2026 after concluding "free and fair" polls following which the army will return to the barracks.

A group of 43 Australian senators and members of parliament have sent a letter to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, calling for urgent action on three key issues—announcing a clear electoral roadmap, ensuring justice for victims of the July uprising and disbanding the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

The letter was delivered to the interim government chief via email, BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Md Rashedul Haque confirmed on Wednesday.
