Govt, political parties should seek a middle ground

THE interim government and several political parties, especially the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, appear to have embarked on a confrontational path about the timing of the next general elections. While the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and some other parties have increasingly called for the elections to be held by December 2025, the government remains firm on its earlier decision to hold the polls by June 2026. The standoff, which has already turned intense, risks escalating further if the BNP and its allied parties follow through with the demonstrations they are staging. The BNP and its political allies also seem to have lost confidence in the government’s reform agenda, which has largely stalled because of a lack of consensus among political parties, with only one or two proposals seeing partial agreement.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has commented that it is possible to hold elections before December.

"We think that if their (government's) intention is good after completing the proposed reforms and they are in favor of democracy, we have demanded that elections be held by December. He says National Charter aims to forge agreement between citizens and political parties for accountability

Ali Riaz, vice-chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has emphasised that any amendment to the Constitution must reflect the views and aspirations of the people.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion in Dhaka on Thursday, he said the commission is working to build national consensus on a series of fundamental reforms.

“There has been agreement on some issues,” Riaz noted. “Further discussions with political parties will continue, and we hope to finalise a Citizen Charter by July.”

You’d like to think that with this December election date being repeated and pushed so hard now, that Yunus is going to have to give way, and announce the date quite soon, just to prevent more unrest ….

Uncertainty created as specific polls date has not been announced: Tarique

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today came down heavily on the interim administration, saying uncertainty has been created in the state and politics as the government is yet to announce a specific date for the national election, even after 10 months in office.

This has virtually brought economic activities in the country to a standstill, he added.

Tarique reiterated the demand that the national election be held by December.

BNP leader Ishraque Hossain has issued a stern warning to the authorities, demanding immediate implementation of the Supreme Court's verdict on his swearing-in as Dhaka South City Corporation mayor.

For the next month the BNP are going to be holding more rallies and increasing the pressure for the December election!

BNP had launched a month-long series of programmes aimed at involving the country’s youth in the policymaking process, based on the 31-point outline announced under the directive of the party’s acting Chairman Tarique Rahman which concluded on Wednesday.

yesterdays huge rally was not only a massive success, because it passed off peacefully, the BNP, thanked the police for their help and even made sure the area was cleaned up afterwards…

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed regret over the public inconvenience and traffic congestion caused by its recent youth rallies held in Dhaka and several other cities.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the party said, “We sincerely apologise for the temporary inconvenience caused to city dwellers, particularly due to traffic congestion, as millions of youths gathered in Dhaka and other cities during the vibrant youth rallies.”

BNP also extended its gratitude to the administration, police and traffic department for their cooperation in ensuring the smooth and successful completion of the programmes.

Following the Dhaka rally, cleanliness drives were jointly conducted by three BNP-affiliated organisations and the party expressed thanks to all the sanitation workers who participated in the initiative.
