Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has said that Bangladesh is going to hold the best national election in its history next year.

He made the remark on Wednesday (June 11) while speaking at a dialogue organised by the prominent UK-based policy institute, Chatham House, during his visit to London.

“We are on the verge of holding a real election after 17 years,” said Dr Yunus, adding “It will be the most acceptable, inclusive, and neutral election in our history.”

Dr Yunus said, “A Reform Commission has been formed to build new Bangladesh. Following theirs recommendations we are moving forward.”

By the sounds of it, although February has been the new expected date, Tarique will still be looking to try for December if not sooner ….

Personally I still think it will be February, that way no one loses face, but let’s see, sooner would be even better!

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam yesterday said they were still working to finalise a meeting between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as the UK PM will be visiting Canada.

"What we came to know is that he is visiting Canada. A British parliamentarian came today and told us that Keir Starmer is in Canada," Alam told reporters, reports UNB.

He said the meeting will be held if the schedule is matched. "It's being worked out."

The British prime minister will meet Mark Carney, his Canadian counterpart, on 14 June for discussions concerning security and economic co-operation, according to The Times.

On 10 June, the British PM visited the families of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice Aguiar who were killed in the Southport knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in July, the UK government reported.

Today, he attended a programme "Prime Minister's Questions", in the House of Commons to Keir Starmer, the prime minister, BBC UK reports.

NCP leader served show-cause notice for ‘mafia’ remark

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has issued a show-cause notice to its central executive member Zobairul Alam Manik for making a controversial statement in which he claimed, "We are the biggest mafia."

The notice, signed by NCP's Joint Office Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat, said Zobairul's "objectionable and organisationally inappropriate" comment came to the attention of the party's Central Disciplinary Committee.

The remarks were made on Monday at an Eid reunion event in Chattogram's Anwara upazila.

The statement, according to the notice, tarnished the image of the party and portrayed it negatively in the public eye.

In light of this, the party has asked Zobairul to submit a written explanation within three days to the head of the Central Disciplinary Committee, explaining why organisational action should not be taken against him for violating party discipline and damaging its reputation.

Elected govt essential to ensure investors' security: BGMEA President

Emphasising the need for an elected government, newly elected president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu has said there is no alternative to a people-mandated government to remove insecurity of investors.

He made the remark while exchanging views with reporters at a hotel in Chuadanga district headquarters on Monday night.

"Currently, there is a caretaker [interim] government in the country, and investors are in uncertainty. The decrease in investment has created a kind of stagnation in the economy. Those who want to establish new industries or start a business are also waiting for an elected political government," the business leader said

He said the sooner a legitimate government is formed through a credible election, the quicker the country's economic momentum will be restored, investments will rise, employment opportunities will grow, and business will expand.
