Fakhrul urges govt to rethink about April election timing

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said April is not a favourable time for the national election and hoped that the interim government will take the matter into account based on realities.

"We have not taken any party decision on this issue (election in early April) yet. We hope that the government will consider this issue in light of reality," he said while talking to reporters at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office.

He said the time set by the interim government for the national election is not right.

Left parties announce Dhaka-Ctg protest road march

Left political parties will hold Dhaka-Chattogram road march in June 27– 28 in protest at the interim government’s move to lease out the management of the New Mooring Container Terminal of Chittagong Port to foreign operator.

The march would also protest at the reported move to allow a humanitarian passage to the civil war-ridden Rakhine state of Myanmar.

The Left Democratic Alliance, a combine of six left political parties, took the decision on Monday at an online meeting chaired by alliance coordinator and Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince.

They also urged the government to organise the next general election by December.

Will Yunus be snubbed by Starmer 🤔

No meeting has yet been scheduled between Bangladesh's Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during Yunus’s London visit. Prime Minister Starmer is currently in Canada.

Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam informed at a press briefing at the Bangladesh High Commission in London that a meeting may occur if Starmer returns by June 14 and his schedule permits, according to local media.

In another positive development for the party, the BNP leader said Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health has improved significantly.

“Alhamdulillah, she appears to be physically better than before. That’s what the doctors are saying. She is much better,” Fakhrul said.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to return to Bangladesh "soon", party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Monday.

“Tarique Rahman will certainly return to the country. Of course, he will come back,” he said while speaking to reporters at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.

Asked by journalists when exactly the BNP acting chairman might return home, Fakhrul said, “He will return soon.”

Fakhrul, however, did not give any exact date for the return of Tarique who has been living in the United Kingdom since 2008.

Earlier, the BNP leader confirmed that Tarique will hold a formal meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is currently visiting the UK, on Friday, June 13, in London.

Tarique is set to meet Chief Adviser Yunus at a time of significant disagreement between his party and the interim government over the timing of the next general election.

Fakhrul expressed the hope that the meeting could prove to be a major turning point, stating that if all goes as planned, many issues could be resolved, and new dimensions may emerge.

The whole article is really very interesting, especially to new investors, one thing that I have very quickly picked out was the governments energy minister Fouzul Kabir Khan, said on page 13 -

“A working paper would be prepared for the next elected government in making decisions “

“Mining of our resources is essential for relieving stress on fuel imports”

I could pick out loads more from this seminar, but am quite busy at the moment lol, but this is why the date of the next election is what’s important right now, not old articles or views, and certainly not the odd new investment in renewables, of which is essential anyway, for the future energy mix in Bangladesh …

Foreign investment stalled in Bangladesh due to absence of political government: BNP leader Ershad Ullah

Foreign investment in Bangladesh remains stagnant due to the absence of an elected political government, alleged Chattogram Metropolitan BNP Convener Ershad Ullah.

He said several foreign investors recently visited Bangladesh but expressed reluctance to invest as the country lacks a government formed through democratic elections.

Urging swift national polls, he emphasised that power must be transferred to a political government without delay.

Ershad Ullah made these remarks during a discussion with journalists in Chattogram this afternoon (10 June) at the July Uprising Memorial Hall of Chattogram Press Club.

NCTrade, good to highlight this and I hope that they are a lot more successful in getting some investment in renewables than they have been so far, because to increase from the 4% that they use at the moment to the 10% usage that they want by 2030, they are going to need new investment of at least 3 Billion USD, so they need all the help that they can get…….

Renewables has its place, and of course investment will increase in the coming years, but personally, I’m more interested in the elections at the moment and whether they are in December or April, because this has more relevance to GCM and Phulbari 😉

Sorry for yet another post on this topic, but today the press is full of articles relating to the Yunus, Tarique Rahman meeting on Friday, and emphasising its importance, obviously we know that at the latest the elections will be held by next April, but discussing a December election date is going to be high on the agenda!!

Yunus likely to meet Tarique in London on June 13

December election possible if government ‘sincere’ about reforms, says Left Democratic Alliance

The leaders of the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) have reiterated their call for holding the general election by December this year to revive democracy.

In a media statement on Monday, the party said that if the interim government is sincere, the crucial reforms needed to hold free, fair, and acceptable elections within the timeframe can “certainly be carried out”.

BNP will occupy streets, with support from the people, if the government does not abandon its unilateral decision of holding the next general elections in April 2026, warned Syed Emran Saleh Prince on Monday.

The BNP joint secretary general made the threat during a reunion meeting of grassroots leaders at Dhobaira upazila, Mymensingh.

At the meeting, the BNP leader expressed his surprise at the interim government’s unilateral announcement of holding elections in first half of April next year, ignoring the demands of almost all the political parties and political forces.

Save one or two political parties, all the parties want elections to be held no later than December this year, Prince claimed.

“Yet, the interim government has suddenly disregarded all these forces, and sadly, is repeating the authoritarian unilateral practices of ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina,” alleged Emran Saleh Prince.

If the government does not shelve the unilateral decision-making process regarding elections, BNP will not hesitate to take any decision by taking the people on its side, he threatened.

He also threatened to defy all restrictions on public gatherings near sensitive sites, referring to the Dhaka police’s ban on public gatherings near the Secretariat and chief adviser’s residence effective from Monday.

But BNP does not want such troubling scenario, nor does it wish to see the spirit of the anti-fascist uprising getting tarnished. To BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, the people and democracy are of the highest priority, Prince said.

To this end, he called on the government to review its April 2026 election timeline, and adopt a new timeframe in consultation with the political parties.

There is going to be no let up on the pressure for Yunus to bring the election date forward to December, if not sooner!!

Salahuddin demands quick polls

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has called for establishing a political government quickly through fair elections in the greater interest of democracy.

He said this at the inauguration ceremony of the Pekua Upazila BNP head office at Pekua Chowmuhani in the district.

Pekua Upazila BNP President Bahadur Shah chaired the event while Cox's Bazar District BNP and Pekuta Upazila BNP laders were present.

bnp standing committee member ***eshwar chandra roy on monday said their party will remain on the streets to realise its demand for arranging the next general election in december this year.

“our movement for elections is going on. it doesn’t need to be tied to eid, the monsoon, or any other timeline. we’ve been pressing for this (a credible election) for 17 years. we now want to see an end to this,” he said while talking to reporters at his nayapaltan office.

the bnp leader said their party wants to see an election to be held where voters can cast their ballots without fear. “we are in the movement and we will always demand the election until it is held.”

when asked about possible programmes in support of their demand, he said the nature of the movement will be determined on the streets.
