Tarique Rahman expects most credible election soon under Dr Yunus

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday hoped that the country’s people will immediately see the most credible national election in the country’s history under the leadership of Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus.

“Our expectation is now that the people will immediately see the most free and impartial national election in the country's history under the leadership of a skilled and competent and internationally acclaimed head of interim government,” he said while virtually addressing a discussion.

CA tells political leaders, vows ‘timely’ election

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus reaffirmed on Sunday that he will not remain in office beyond 30 June next year and that a national election will be held before that deadline.

“Prof Yunus made it clear that the election would take place between December and 30 June. He said he will not stay in the chair even for a single day after 30 June next year,” Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters during a press briefing outside the state guest house Jamuna, following a meeting between Prof Yunus and leaders from several political parties on Sunday night.

Textile and garment industry owners said that due to the inadequate supply of gas, the normal manufacturing activities is being hampered in the industry.

Moreover, a number of textile mills are on the verge of shutting down as they are unable to operate even at minimum capacity

‘The government seems like ostrich, everyone is saying about their problems but they hide their head in the sands,’ he added.

He also said that the factories are being strangled to death through anti-industry actions and the working capital has shrunk drastically.

‘It seems that we cannot pay wages and festival allowances properly before Eid and we won’t be able to reopen the factories after Eid,’ he added.

He also said that in 1971, intellectuals were systematically targeted and killed. In 2025, the industry and the industrialists are being targeted destroyed, he added.

He also said that the failure to save the industry could lead the country towards famine.

But, the government is now setting a deadline for the factories to pay wages, otherwise, the owners will be arrested, and their houses and cars will be sold, he lamented.

‘Government should introduce a mid-term strategy and roadmap to resolve the gas and energy issues,’ he added.

AB Party urges compromise over election timing: December or June?

The Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) has called for a consensus-based resolution to the ongoing debate over the timing of the next national election, asking both the interim government and the BNP to clarify their positions on whether polls should be held in December or delayed until June due to unavoidable circumstances.

AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju raised the issue during a press briefing following his participation in an all-party meeting at the residence of the Chief Advisor to the interim government in Jamuna on Sunday evening.

In his remarks, Monju questioned the rationale behind the political deadlock:

“What is the problem with holding the election in December? And what is the issue if, due to unavoidable circumstances, it gets delayed until June? The people deserve a clear explanation from both the interim government and the BNP.”

Only elected individuals are authorised to amend constitution: security expert

Major General (retd) ANM Muniruzzaman, a security expert and the president of Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS), today said the constitution must not be amended by any authority other than elected representatives.

"Personally, I believe the constitution must remain untouched by unelected individuals or bodies. Only those who have been elected through a democratic process have the legitimate authority to amend it," he said.

"If others attempt to bring major changes, it will create complications that will be difficult for the nation to overcome."

Tensions continue to persist as the main political parties stick to their guns, creating a sense of uncertainty among the people in general.

Though several advisers told media that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus did not mention anything about quitting from his post as reported on Friday, the council of advisers in a statement on Saturday said that if they faced obstruction, they might take 'necessary decisions'.

Hectic efforts continued throughout the day on Saturday to dispel the uneasiness in the political arena as the Chief Adviser met separately with BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the NCP.

But the outcome of these meetings shows that these parties are wide apart on issues related to election roadmap, with BNP demanding general elections by December and resignation of national security adviser Khalilur Rahman and two advisers of the interim government picked from students who participated in the July uprising.

On the other hand, Jamaat and NCP stressed that they had no objection if election is held by June next year.

The NCP, however, demanded cancellation of all elections held under the Sheikh Hasina regime including the local government polls. This is seen by political analysts as a shrewd move to block BNP leader Ishrak Hossain's bid to assume the post of Mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation.

This will further put both BNP and NCP on a confrontational course, political observers fear.

After the meeting with the CA, BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the party sought a roadmap for the national elections immediately.

Demonstrators demand Yunus be made president for 5 years

A group of demonstrators held a "March for Yunus" rally in Shahbagh today (24 May), demanding that Chief Adviser of the interim government Muhammad Yunus be appointed president and remain in power for the next five years.

The organisers, rallying under the banner of "Desher Sorbostorer Jonogon" [People from All Walks of Life] also called for the formation of a national government with participation from all oppressed political parties.

The event took place in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh this afternoon.

Their other demands include amending the constitution and ensuring justice for the July killings.

During the event, the organisers and participants chanted a range of slogans, including "Yunus, unite the nation, save Bangladesh," "Reform first, elections later," "Who are you, who am I? Yunus, Yunus!" and "Not Delhi, but Dhaka."
