The rise of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Tarique Rahman
Yunus met Rahman amid a looming political deadlock over the election timeline. The BNP had been threatening countrywide protests against Yunus, who leads the interim government. According to informed sources from both the government and the BNP, the meeting was cordial, and the two leaders agreed to hold general elections in February 2026.
The BNP had been pushing for early elections and preferred a December 2025 timeline. The interim government, however, argued that elections should only take place after reforms to the Constitution, judiciary, and electoral institutions were completed. Yunus recently announced plans to hold elections in April 2026. With political tensions mounting, the agreement on February elections is viewed as a significant compromise.
The London meeting has been hailed as “historic” and was celebrated across the country. In a political culture long dominated by zero-sum dynamics and authoritarian governance under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Yunus–Rahman agreement signaled a rare willingness to avoid conflict. According to Yunus’s close aides, he was highly impressed with the BNP leader.
