Four-hour blockade at Shahbagh halts traffic, causes suffering

A group of protesters identifying themselves as "July Warriors" blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka for four hours today demanding speedy implementation of July Charter.

The sit-in began around 10:30am on Thursday, initiated by a platform called “July Joddha Sangsad” (July Warriors’ Council). As a result, severe traffic congestion spread through Shahbagh and surrounding roads.

All vehicular movement in the Shahbagh area came to a complete halt, leading to heavy traffic snarls nearby.

Commuters were forced to suffer long delays, with many seen walking to their destinations or relying on detoured public transport routes.

Interim govt should now announce its exit plan: Debapriya

Debapriya Bhattacharya, distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), has said it is time for the interim government to make an exit, urging it to prepare an “exit plan”.

“It must now be made clear how this government will leave. It is also uncertain whether the next government will legitimise all the decisions taken by this one,” he said at a seminar organised by Democracy Dias Bangladesh at a hotel in the capital’s Gulshan on Wednesday.

He also said the government, despite its prolonged stay in office, has failed to meet public expectations. “The longer it clings to power, the deeper the crisis will grow.”

The National Consensus Commission wants to conclude its discussions on important issues for state reform with political parties today, Thursday, with the aim of formulating the “July Charter”, its Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz said.

National Consensus Commission Vice Chairman Prof Ali Riaz has said that he would hand over an acceptable draft of the much-talked-about July Charter to all parties on Thursday.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to hand over a comprehensive and acceptable draft of the July Charter to all parties by tomorrow,” he said while addressing a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday.

BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo has said that if the next parliamentary election is held in December this year, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will participate in it.

The BNP leader, also a prominent businessman in the country, came up with the statement at a view exchange meeting in Feni on Wednesday.

He said, “We want to believe that the election will be held in the first week of February next year. Even, as per the current situation, the election can be held before February.”

If the caretaker government system is reinstated, the election will be held within 90 days under the administration. In this case, if the next parliamentary election is held in December this year, our leader Khaleda Zia will participate in it.”

After reading this interview again, could it be that the courts rule that the elections have to take place earlier, (within 90 days) and take the decision out of Yunus’s hands 🤷‍♂️

However, considering the current situation, elections could take place even earlier, possibly in January, as a case on the caretaker government is currently under hearing at the Supreme Court.”

Speaking at the outset of the 22nd day of the second phase of discussions at the Foreign Service Academy's Doel Hall in the capital, Ali Riaz emphasized the urgency of the reform process.

"The topics that have received unambiguous agreement will be compiled into a document and distributed to all party delegates by the afternoon," he said, adding,

"We must accelerate today's discussion so that a Charter of Consensus can be finalized and presented tomorrow."

Voter list being updated in 3 phases; final one before polls schedule: EC secretary

"We published the first list on 2 March as per usual procedures. The second list — updating excluded names and including those who turn 18 by 1 January 2025 — will be released next week," he told reporters at the Nirbachan Bhaban in capital's Agargaon.

EC to unveil draft electoral roll with more than 4.45mn new voters on Aug 10

The Election Commission (EC) will finalise the updated voter roll in August ahead of the 13th parliamentary election.

Before that, a draft list will be published on Aug 10, and any corrections, claims, or objections must be submitted by Aug 21.

The EC announced the development and schedule for publishing the 2025 updated voter list's draft and final version on Tuesday, according to its Additional Secretary KM Ali Newaz.
