The BNP has decided to remain vigilant about any conspiracy against the parliamentary elections and watch the situation closely till October this year for the announcement of the election schedule.

Party insiders said it has also asked its leaders and activists not to step into any trap or respond to any provocation during this time and to remain prepared for a tougher movement from November for the polls, if necessary.

EC bars journalists from live streaming or staying over 10 minutes in polling booths

Journalists will not be allowed to stay inside a polling booth for more than 10 minutes or go live from within the booth or on social media platforms like Facebook, according to a set of new guidelines issued by the Election Commission for media personnel covering the election news.

As per the ‘Guidelines for Journalists/Media Personnel Assigned to Cover Election News 2025,’ the journalists with valid accreditation cards issued by the Election Commission can enter the polling centres.

Upon entry, they must inform the presiding officer before gathering election-related information, taking photographs or recording videos.

Four major Islamic parties decide to strengthen unity ahead of election

Top leaders of the country's four major Islamic parties on Friday decided to strengthen their unity ahead of the upcoming national election.

They reached the consensus at a special meeting at the central office of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, said a press release.

according to reliable bnp sources, a preliminary outline for a three-month-long political programme has been drafted. it includes proposals for road marches, divisional rallies, and constituency-based processions.

these proposals were presented at an organisational meeting held last wednesday at the party’s central office in nayapaltan, dhaka. bnp’s acting chairman tarique rahman joined the meeting virtually.

recent government actions have raised doubts about the likelihood of elections being held by february. bnp policymakers suspect that certain quarters within the interim administration, along with some political groups, are conspiring to delay the polls.

in response, the party has decided to adopt a new political strategy centred on sustained campaigning to build public pressure.

The students-led National Citizen Party (NCP) is now preparing for righting the wrong after its application for registration was primarily rejected by the Election Commission, citing some minor technical mistakes or deficiencies, party sources said.

Overlapping information, lack of attestation and duplication of data were some of the causes the EC identified. Of late, the EC issued a letter to the NCP detailing the to-do list.

The EC identified six shortcomings in the application and asked the NCP to submit it again after meeting all the requirements by August 3.

The letter said that the list of all the effective district offices of the party with their addresses had not been given.

The name of the party is not mentioned in the rental agreements for the Dhaka and Sylhet district offices.

I know that i have said it before, but with the pressure that had been put on the EC to get the July Charter completed on time, I do still wonder if the elections will still be bought forward and held earlier than Feb 2026. The pressure does seem to be mounting ....

Political parties on Wednesday reached a consensus to form the Election Commission through a constitutionally mandated selection committee, led by the speaker of parliament.

The consensus was made among 30 political parties during the 18th session of the National Consensus Commission’s second-round dialogue at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

The parties overwhelmingly agreed to amend the constitution’s article 118 (1) which defines the formation of the EC. The existing constitution empowers only the president to appoint the top officials of the constitutional body.

NCC vice-chair Professor Ali Riaz said, ‘The consensus, achieved through significant concessions by various political parties from their earlier positions, paves the way for establishing an independent and effective EC.’

At the beginning of the session, representatives from the Communist Party of Bangladesh, the Socialist Party of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod staged a symbolic 10-minute walkout protesting at Tuesday’s police crackdown on demonstrating students at the secretariat.

The NCC on Tuesday proposed an appointment mechanism for five top officials of the EC. However, the finalised mechanism on Wednesday cancelled the five-member EC formation and suggested that the size of the EC would be determined by law to allow its expansion in the future.

BNP urges CA to erase ambiguity over polls before Feb next year

BNP has urged Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus to remove all ambiguities on the way to hold the 13th parliamentary election before February next year.

The government has announced that the next general election will be held a week before Ramadan to be observed in February next year, but did not mention any date, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday.

“Now we expect that the chief adviser would come up with a formal announcement, eliminating all ambiguities over the national election,” he said while talking to reporters after a meeting held at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka.
