United Power’s Tk 955cr dues put Titas and Karnaphuli Gas in crisis

United Group, a major private power producer in Bangladesh, is facing mounting scrutiny over its failure to pay gas dues amounting to Tk 955 crore (68.2 Million ££ ) to state-owned Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDL) and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL).

The group's subsidiary, United Power Generation and Distribution Company Limited (UPGD) , operates two gas-based power plants located in the Dhaka and Chittagong Export Processing Zones (EPZs). Despite supplying electricity to industrial customers and feeding surplus power into the national grid, UPGD has long refused to pay gas bills at the captive rate, as mandated by the government.

Tariff renegotiation triggers worries about local, foreign investments

Power-sector investors, particularly in the renewable-energy sector, get in dilemmas over government move to renegotiate tariffs as they say contract-time and current costs make a mismatch.

The rate re-fixing is especially disadvantageous for those who have already started electricity generation with a specific business model, stakeholders say.

A number of renewable energy-based power plants received letters from Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) regarding tariff renegotiation in recent weeks.

Some more companies are set to receive such letters.

Government's Power Division in recent months asked the BPDB to renegotiate tariffs with a number of companies that are already producing electricity and about to begin doing so.

It recently asked the BPDB to review and reset the logical tariffs for the 100-megawatt solar power plant of Dynamic Sun Energy Private Ltd.

EC moves forward with full swing preparations for 13th parliamentary elections

DHAKA, July 11, 2025 (BSS) – The Election Commission (EC) is moving forward with full swing preparations to hold the 13th parliamentary elections on time.

To this end, the commission has started pre-election preparatory work to take the upcoming parliamentary elections to an acceptable level.

Meanwhile, the commission in its eighth meeting on Thursday took several important decisions to speed up necessary preparations ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election.

Looks like the BNP are keeping up the pressure about a specific election date, and not settling for just early to mid February..

I know that I’m like a broken record, but again after seeing today’s press on how the country is getting worse and suffering due to not having an elected government, i personally can still see in the end, Yunus wanting to bring the election forward more …

BNP demands specific February election date, says outcome is obvious to all

The BNP has pressed the interim government to fix a specific date for the general election, accusing certain quarters of trying to derail the process through “diversionary tactics” in the name of reform and justice.

At a protest event in Dhaka on Friday, the party’s Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu warned that the longer the government delays naming a date, the deeper the “crisis” will grow.

He said the path to stability lies in “a clear and timely declaration”.

According to Dudu, there is now “real hope” for a national election following a meeting in London between BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.

Those of us that have been here for a while now and know the full history and story, know that those SP figures are very achievable in the next few weeks / months as we lead up to the elections ….

The whole story has now taken on a more positive feel for GCM …

- BNP are predicted to have a land slide win at the next elections!

- BNP have stated in their manifesto that they intend to use the country’s own resources rather than import to produce the energy needed for the country’s growth!

- The Interim Government in Februarys coal seminar said that they were doing all of the paperwork and preparations so that if wanted the new government could easily give the green light to Phulbari … and did actually mention Phulbari open pit mining!

What’s not to like lol …. Exciting few weeks / months ahead here ….

Just to help, this article is from February 2025, when there was a coal seminar held in Bangladesh, there were government officials, as well as businessmen from throughout Bangladesh that attended, all but one speaker was in favour of Bangladesh using their own coal, and ,this article highlights that the Interim Government were not just in favour of Bangladesh using their own coal resources, they had said that they were going to do all the background work so that the next elected government could give the green light….

Obviously we all know that Phulbari, and open pit mining is the only money ready to go and can be producing coal within two years!!

Just as well China have already said that that they will be happy to invest, especially in energy, once there is an elected government in power, and have already been in discussions with the BNP

China has full confidence in Bangladesh’s future elected government: Envoy

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen today said here that China not only supports the current interim government but also has full confidence in Bangladesh’s future elected government.

“No matter who leads Bangladesh, China will continue to increase trade and investment in the country, supporting its sustainable development and the improvement of people's livelihoods,” he said.

In the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Bangladesh and China reiterated their commitment to advancing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and integrating industrial and supply chains for mutual benefit.

No exact date has been given yet, but Yunus has told the EC only yesterday to have everything prepared by December so that elections can be held before Ramadan which is in February, although this can be bought forward, which I personally think it will be, but that’s just my opinion

There’s no need to spam GCM on other boards…. The facts here are quite simple,

- Bangladesh elections to take place between December / February 2026

- BNP are expected to win with a landslide

- BNP are already working very closely with the Chinese

- BNP in their manifesto have said that they will use ALL the resources of the country and cut back on imports

- GCM are obviously already working closely with Power China and have MOU’s

- China have once again emphasised over the last few days that Bangladesh need to improve their energy situation in order to get major investments from China

- China have again over the last few days mentioned about the “Belt and Road initiative” of which we know Phulbari is associated with..

So what’s not to like…. As we get closer and closer to the elections, these share imvho, are going to become more tightly held than they have for many years, and would expect the SP to be many multiples of what it is today….

Let’s see what the next few weeks / months brings, as the election gets closer and the news flow really takes off!

Bangladeshi expats to vote by postal ballot in next election: EC

The election commission has announced that expatriate Bangladeshis will be able to cast their votes through the postal ballot system in the upcoming parliamentary election.

“The final decision was made over the votes of expatriate Bangladeshis. Inshallah the expatriates will vote this time. The voting system will be the postal balloting,” said election commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah after a meeting of the commission.
